Check out the particleengine svn branch and you will get that too.

You can download a test build here:

Some new pictures from the particle engine:

We will maybe use it for hit effects and levelup effects in the next version. Mapbased effects will have to wait until the next release of Tiled (the map editor).

There won't be any magic on the current server. Just because we can now spawn some nice effects to visualize magic doesn't mean that we will waste time on implementing the game mechanics for a magic system on eAthena. We will use the time and energy for programming the game mechanics on the new server instead.

really nice effects :)
Are those red dots in the grass particles too? (because the overlapping the char)

(btw. nothing can beat Proton! Its still the best text editor available. I'm using it as far as I can remember for every kind of plain text format :D)
Peacemaker: Level 58 - STR 60+ / AGI 30 / VIT 36 / INT 5 / DEX 20 / LUK 5 - wiped because of inactivity... :(

Yes, that is a particle effect, too. The red dots orbit around the character. Unfortunately the effect doesn't really look that impressive on a static screenshot. It looks much better when you see it in motion.

Here a new version of the waterfall effect with fog:

In case you worry about the performance impact: it is in fact quite low. I have a fps loss of about 10% with the waterfall on screen which will be with its 750 particles average one of the most complex effects you will see ingame.

Not yet but animated particles are on the todo list.

What exactly are you imaging right now?

I didn't think about animations but rather an alpha blending from a texture to another. Like the particles have a blue texture at the top of the waterfall and turn to a white texture while falllling...

Well animation would be great too.
A lot of effects would look better with it. Explosions, butterflies and falling leaves for example.

Also in the Unreal particle engine you could assign a one dimensional bitmap (single row of pixels) to an emitter and his particles would start with the color of the first pixel and end with the color of the last pixel. Would be cool to have this ability for both color (think fire going from blue to yellow to red) and opacity (think flashing/glowing fireflies).
If you're looking for 3D FOSS games be sure to check out LucKey Productions on itch.io

Hmmm, that would require to change the colors of the particle graphics in real-time. But the idea to make the engine recolor equipment or hair sprites at runtime is also going around for a while. When we get around to program this we should keep in mind that the same algorithmn would also be useful for the particle engine.
