Game balance issues?

Post by thebat137 »

I don't mean to be a baby about this, and it's possible I'm doing something very very wrong, but I'm level 22 now and I've been playing for hours, and the only things I can reasonably fight are the monsters in Tulimshar, the maggots and basic scorpions and fire goblins. I can also fight a green slime in the desert if I start at full health and bring a whole bunch of healing items with me, but since the item drop rate is so low, fighting one of those buggers is a significant investment of my resources. And I can't heal up quickly afterwards, because I barely have any money for the inn because of the aforementioned low item drop rate. I can't even complete the red scorpion quest because I can't survive fighting a red scorpion!

I really think this game has potential, but I'm getting pretty tired of fighting fire goblins and not being able to progress out of the town. Am I doing something horribly wrong here?

I keep seeing people talking about the bat cave, but I can't find it. If I go east or west from town, or down into that cave by the miner there's monsters that are way too nasty for me. If I try to go north from the town the path seems to be blocked by something invisible, or, at least, I can't seem to go through the gate. There's all these things around that look like signposts, which I would expect would be helpful, but I can't seem to read them. Am I missing something?

No, the signposts can't be read.

The bat cave can be found in the woodland area. To reach it you have to leave the map south of tulimshar to the west and then cross the landbridge. There are quite dangerous creatures waiting for you there, but they are slow so you can easily avoid them. The woodland area itself is save. Happy exploring.

You might have heard a certain rumor about me. This rumor is completely false. You might also have heard the other rumor about me. This rumor is 100% accurate.

Oh. I guess the problem I've been having then is that the aggressive scorpions seem to be able to attack me from several tiles away (due to lag?) making them not as trivial to avoid as I'd think they ought to be. So every time I walk in there I die pretty fast. That combined with the lack of useful signposts or helpful hints from the townsfolk caused me to conclude that I wasn't ready to head that way yet.

And having gotten there just now I found the entrance surprisingly hard to walk through. I almost gave up and was mentally composing a bug report about invisible barriers.

But I know this is very pre-1.0 so. :)

are there any plans to make it readable, yet?

basically, someone just need to place a 100% transparent NPC over it (like i did it with the crafting npcs). I believe readable signs, book(shelves), wall inscriptions or internal monologue messages would be a great benefit to tmw...

As long as I'm whining noobily... Is there any way I can avoid getting sent all the way back to Tulimshar if I die in the batcave? It's kind of a long way to walk...

Hm. Levelling does proceed somewhat faster now that I'm in a more sensible area. But I'm wondering if any consideration has been given to having creatures always drop some nominal amount of money when you kill them, as opposed to selling items being the only way to obtain money. It still seems like the equipment acquisition and quest completion is pretty slow, bordering on tedious, and faster cashflow might help resolve that. I'm not really so much into the "spend two hours killing bats over and over and over in the same way so that eventually I'll be strong enough to actually make progress" thing. :)

Note that nobody is giving the balancing and gameplay any attention at the moment, so you're basically talking to yourself here. There's two options, either you develop a plan to fix it (and afterwards, proceed to actually do it) or you just content yourself with what is there.

Of course, there's always the slight possibility that pointing out problems like this will eventually get somebody else to fix them. But then be sure not to be in a hurry.

Heh, fair enough. I guess I'm still kinda poking around and trying to understand what's going on, so.

On that topic, I wandered around this hill at the north end of the snow village and discovered there's a cave entrance at the back of it. But the cave only seems to have just the one room -- there's something just to the left of the entranceway that looks like it should be a passage down to a lower level, but I can't walk through it. Am I running into a bug here, or is the lower level not in existence yet? I'm using version 0.0.23 of the client for linux.

I can get started on sign posts that are readable... that's not something very hard to do.
