Question about TMW

Post by hp-nix »

Hi to all :) I've got two questions:
1) this game will be free forever? And what about server? In future, can i hold my own sever? Or i must pay money for this?
2) What about bosses in the game? Will we need a big party for down them? :D
Thanks for all. It's really cute and fonderful game! :)

Both the client and the server are free software licensed under the GNU GPL. Free as in freedom, not as in free beer. This means the software can be used by anyone for any purpose. The only restriction is that when you modify the software and give it away you have to give it away under the same conditions. The GPL also allows to make money with the game. But we do not intent to charge a fee for playing on the official server.
2) What about bosses in the game? Will we need a big party for down them? :D
Hopefully.

You might have heard a certain rumor about me. This rumor is completely false. You might also have heard the other rumor about me. This rumor is 100% accurate.

If the game hits off big one day we might see that. We'd need a massive number of people for that to happen though.

Personally, I don't ever see it happening. The game hopefully will hit off big, but multipul servers? Doubtful.
And if there were multipul servers over the globe then who is to maintain these servers?
I doubt anyone would like to shell out the money to travel as often as would need be done.

Regards,

First of all, current server that hosts TMW (among other projects) costed over $4000, add to this power, connectivity etc. and it is still nothing comparing to the amount of money spent to host, for example http://www.kernel.org, so don't say people are not willing to spent money for non profit or/and open source initiatives.

And about travelling around the globe etc. you are showing your blatant unawareness of server platfroms and their management. Alot of companies, including commercial ones, are hosting servers all over the globe without the need to travel to them, KVM over Net can be found in the smallest data centers, not telling that even lowest end, cheap servers has the management module which works independently from the operating system and allows you to power off/on/reboot, gives the access to server console over the Internet or management network - exactly like you would have terminal attached directly to it - and many other, useful functions, also worth mentioning is on-site staff supporting even the cheapest dedicated servers, who will insert you a CDROM or switch cables.

So, before you are being doubtful, make sure your doubts are build on a solid base.

Regards.

It is unlikely that we from the development team will maintain a worldwide server network. We are quite happy about the server in Poland that we get for free. When we would open server farms all over the world I doubt that we can keep them all free to play. But as I said: The server software is freely available for the public. This means the community can provide local servers. When you want a server in your country then get some people together and organize it yourself.
