What kind of MMORPG gamer are you?
What kind of MMORPG gamer are you?
According to a research by Richard Bartle there are 4 kinds of people who play MMORPGs.
1. The Achiever
The archiever wants to be the best. He wants to reach the highest level, the best and most flashy equipment, the biggest pile of gold or archieve things noone else archieved (like beating the strongest boss monster with bare hands). Their biggest motivation is appreciation and envy by other players.
Favorite features: A lot of public statistics and leaderboards where they can read their name, hard to get items that look cool but serve no real purpose.
Greatest pride: Being the first one to hit the level cap with a new character in just one week. They had to take a vacation and spend 200 millions of gold on potions and equipment for this run but now everyone on the server knows them.
2. The Explorer
The Explorers like to discover areas and secrets. They want to find everything the game has to offer and explore it in every detail. Their curiosity is not limited to the geography of the game world but also includes the game mechanics. They like to try out obscure character types and playing styles and measure their performance. They try to research and understand every aspect of the game mechanics to its fullest.
Favorite features: Interesting game world, complex game mechanics, a lot of freedom in character development.
Greatest pride: A 15 page long guide about how to raise, equip and play a melee wizard.
3. The Socializer
The Socializers are not playing MMORPGs because of the gameplay itself but mostly for the interaction with other people. These are people who spend hour after hour sitting around and chatting. When they join dungeon parties they usually don't do it to gain levels, gold and items but to do something together with other people.
Favorite features: Chat system, guild system, visual character customisation.
Greatest pride: Being known as "that guy/girl who is always sitting on that bench at the marketplace and always knows the latest gossip about everyone and everything"
4. The Killer
The Killers are the typical PvP ethusiasts. They wants to show that they are better than anyone else, but they don't want to show it with their flashy gear like the archiever but by beating everyone else in combat. They consider success in player versus player combat the real goal in the game and all other aspects of the game just as preparation for it.
Favorite features: A PvP system where player skill is important.
Greatest pride: A video where they single-handedly kill like 20 guys in a row in PvP combat.
