Private chat

Post by Crush »

As some of you might have heard peavey recently provided a patch to enable one on one private chat with the current client.

What do you think about this? How do you think will this affect the community? On one hand it will improve communication because it allows you to talk with people who are at the other end of the world. But on the other hand it could make the game a lot more quiet when not all chat is public. I think that it also worsens the immersion in the game world because communicating with people who aren't close to you is unrealistic in a fantasy setting.

Hey...

I think it's good to also have the possibility to write private messages...

I also think it won't affect the community, because now if people want to talk private, they just move to the casino or something.

It's for sure unrealistic, but useful to ask e.g. where someone is at the moment, instead of searching him or wait for him a long time.

What about renaming whisper command to telepathy, which would require telepathy skill?

Any modified game mechanics regarding whispering are quite out of discussion. We are just using the already implemented eAthena functionality. You are however free to suggest any complex mechanics regarding player interaction for TMWServ.

I think its a grad thing to have in the game so if you like to buy stuff from other and you are trading whet them then you do have to spam the main chat.
but i think it will be most handy when the buddy list is done, so you can talk whet them if whey are at another map

Hi,

Universal private chat does not inherently modify what you can/cannot do in practice. However, I fear that it may make the game less fun overall (at least for me) by making it less social. Whenever you have the choice between two designs-- one that neccessarily affects many people and one that allows the effect to be restricted to one or two-- then the former will be a more `social' feature, since you need to think about the group effect, rather than the individual effect. Talking out loud affects an arbitrary number of people, and having to talk out loud (unless you want to use less convenient alternatives) therefore makes the game inherently more social.

To illustrate my point: Most of the quests in TMW are `non-social' by the above definition, since they only benefit the person undertaking the quest. One exception to this was last year's Christmas Quest, another are the various events hosted by the HMC. The former I missed, unfortunately (though it appears to have been very well-received), but the latter I have consistently found to be far more entertaining than the scripted (non-social) quests.

Oh, and on a final note: if you do happen to add universal private chat, then please give players a way to turn it off.

How about this:
When person whispers to another, a check is made -> if there is someone near you two (like 6 tiles or less), the whispered message is drawn to his/hers chat.

Downside of this would be the requirement to be close to each other when chatting privately.

I think we shouldn't have the range of chat, everyone should be able to whisper to each other without being dependent of location.

If realism is an issue, maybe you can only talk to people on teh other end of the world when you buy a cell phone ^_^

We can't speak about realism when we have the text popping over your head, I think. Especially private messages shouldn't be ranged.
