I’m thinking about making four different tilesets

Ground: grass, dirt, cliffs, and rocks
Objects: plants, trees, and stumps
Water: water, and water plants
Special: light beams, sky, and parallax layer

I'll post the leftovers, after the tilesets are done (hopefully they will be used somewhere else in the game)
You can expect to see my old plants in the leftovers

In the given example it does not look like something which would be shoulder or even waist height of the player. Do you picture it to be more like an ankle deep shrubbery instead of a full blown bush?
I haven't taken the height of the player into account yet, but it is probably waist height. What would have make it ankle deep? Is it the lack of shadow? Afterall, the whole bush has, in average, the same intensity. I just can't quite picture how shadow works on a random shaped object as a whole.

I am having the same problem with the thorn bush I am making. No matter how I draw it, it still looks flat. Would it help if I make regions closer to the ground darker even though nothing is shadowing them?

I see. Is it possible to use multiple tilesets on the same map?

yes! Most of the maps currently in use, utilize more than one tileset

I'm sure it can be simplified (just to lazy to do it)

Test it out and give me some feedback :!:

I think you should rearrange that a bit and add the rock bridge to the ground set.

The single rocks in the upper right are higher than one tile, aren't they? In that case they should go into an _x2 tileset.

I would also try to make them fit into one horizontal tile. This will increase their usability for mappers a lot (there is nothing worse for functional map building than objects which take a lot of tiles but only block a few of them). The shadows could be integrated in grass tiles.

Playing around with this in Tiled, so far my criticisms to make them fit better.

All but one of the rocks (the middle one) needs to be on the x2 set, and it would certainly be most awesome if they didn't take 4 tiles per rock...right now they can't be placed too close together, unless I were to put the shadow on the next higher layer. So perhaps merging them to one horizontal layer isn't necessary.

The dirt, grass, and plant/grass tiles in the middle of the enclosing rock tiles, should be placed up with the border tiles to the dirt. This would be placing them more efficiently.
And you should maybe try making room for some water/river tiles, they will need to go on the ground layer too.
You should also try putting everything a little bit closer, that way not so much space is wasted.

Other than that, great job! =)

* Fixed a problem with the tree trunks (I still need to add shadows)

Image

* I’ve decided these 3 plants Saphy made are going to be used as water plants
Image
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I still need to fix

*some tileablity errors and do some cleaning up (Fix light direction)

* Change the format of the ground shadow tiles to Image

* Create water tiles

* Adjust to fit with collision layer when need

* Minimize space used by the tileset, removes redundant tiles, and adjust for easier use

My goal is to have all this done in two weeks (I’ll release the special set later)

Testing cut trucks(with shadow)

The dark lines along the bottom of the roots are standing out to much with out the intense shadow of the full trees, I'm going to lighten them a bit.

The cut trunks are wider than a character is tall. I wonder what could cut off a tree of that size that straight...

Lol, haven't you ever played Zelda a link to the past (two lumberjacks are cutting down a tree with a two person saw)
Hold on getting screenshot

So you are implying that there are chainsaws in the mana world, ces?

I am just wondering if this inconsistency could be used as a plot hook. Maybe there is a boss monster with a really (really (really!)) big and sharp axe who cut them down?

Ahhh. Note to self, do not post things when you’re newly awaken at four in the morning... I failed to notice the chainsaw, but I have this image in my head of a (manual) saw I saw once in real life.

Here’s a better image.

EDIT: Len’s screenie says it all. :D

Random thought: Currently the players’ look like ants compared to their surroundings, but I say we go with this and create some over sized monsters!
