The Mana World Total Conversion
Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
Crank: Do whatever you wish until you are not breaking the statements of GPL. But splitting project between too incompatible licences IMO is a big mistake.

Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
When I was little I called group hugs, a "hoohaw". *tries a hoohaw*So just clear this up and have a group hug or something before this gets even more out of hand.
Anyhow Crank, I wish you and your team luck in your adventure, we will appreciate all of the code and work that your team may do that will help TMW. (I'm curious if you are going to use eAthena or TMWServ? If you are going to use TMWServ, that would awesome for us!) And I appologize if I may have seemed a bit rude.
But I would appreciate it if you could explain to me where you see the advantage of keeping your content closed, when you don't plan on selling your product. I have seen other people choose to license things in this fashion, and I truly can't see the advantage in it, it perplexes me. Could you, please, explain to me where you see the advantage for your project? Pretty please?

Call me Crank :3. I am a man, display picture is the misses.
Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
On the contrary, thank you for understanding us.
But, please do mention your basis for using a non-open license for the content. I'm quite curious after all this.

You should organize forks on your own. And do not post it here.

Maybe I'm a bit slow, but...
Isn't that there a violation of the GNU GPL license?Sylerean Online is not going to be open source
There can be only one.
Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
Not necessarily. The client and server must remain GPL, but if the content is custom, it can have any license they want.Jarulf wrote:Maybe I'm a bit slow, but...

Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
Why do you need to develop separely and then go through the trouble of contributing back? What is the problem with coding directly on tmw and tmwserv instead? With the next version of TMW (0.0.25) the intention is already to make eAthena send in the update host (and tmwserv would do the same), so that you can serve custom content from a custom server more easily. As the need arises we can work to make more aspects customizable.Crank wrote:We are planning on developing the TMWserv to perfection, but at first we are going to use eAthena. We will also release our version of TWMserv back to this community! :3
We had the same thing with the TME project. It's much nicer and beneficial for everybody when we work together. Multiple projects like these are very welcome, but I think it's silly for everybody to start maintaining his own copies of tmw and tmwserv. They are meant to be generic, not just for playing The Mana World!

Ok. I thought Crank was talking about the client & server fork.jaxad0127 wrote:Not necessarily. The client and server must remain GPL, but if the content is custom, it can have any license they want.

Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
Content of TMW is relased also under GPL, so all derivating work that contains this work also has to be GPL'd.

Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
Uh, yes, but since the client downloads the content dynamically (so it is released separately) and does not depend on any particular content to run, I believe content can be licensed differently from the client itself. Just like the GPL would not spread to a document when edited in a GPL word processor.Platyna wrote:Content of TMW is relased also under GPL, so all derivating work that contains this work also has to be GPL'd.
It is only when they would take any of our current dynamic content and _extend_ or _modify_ it, that their extensions and modifications would also have to be under the GPL.
Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
You are right, IF they will create own content and will not modify our.

Re: The Mana World Total Conversion
We dont plan on using anything from TMW, we are also not using TMWserv or anything like that anymore.
Can you please just close and delete this. None of the details are even accurate anymore due to me not updating this at all.
