It looks very nice! Though I must confess that I first saw it as a wooden bowl turn upside-down. Perhaps making the rim narrower, giving it the appearance of a wide, thin, hollow cone? [Wikipedia: Conical straw hat]
I believe the thick rim was what confused me at first, but it could also have been the texture which I find looking like something between wood and straw, not sure what gives me that feeling though.
And welcome to the forums, a nice introduction I dare say!
Thanks a lot for the comments. Ces I think I understand what you mean, had a similar feeling about it. Now I changed the height which makes the hat wider.

Indeed, shape looks ok. IMO it is a bit textureless. Also don't be afraid of 8-bit alpha channel. Maybe something like this?
I really like how iru got the structure to be clear. I might be a bit off with this crappy laptop monitor of mine, but the tone choice for the structural highlights could be the point where the potential for improvement still exists.

I just made outline thinner, and add some highlight on opacity 30%. It is just cheap trick ;P
