Gems and pearls

Post by fate »

Hi,

while I haven't gotten too far yet, here are some possible treasure items:

Emerald (large)

Any feedback would be appreciated. (The underlying idea for gems would be that they exist in different sizes and both cut and uncut.)

I prefer the larger one.

I don't think we should be limiting ourselves to relative sizes for item icons. You mention having different sized gems, but that doesn't mean the smallest needs to fit in a 6 pixel square so it looks smaller. That doesn't leave much room for detail or differentiation. We can indicate size in other ways.

It's way to small, you have a 32x32 space. the size should be at least doubled of the pearl.

That sounds excessive. Part of what makes pearls recognisable is that they are small (usually). Here is what it would look like:

On a separate note, here is my first attempt at a raw (uncut) emerald:

All images except for the initial small pearl put together:

Hi,

I shrank and reduced the outline a little to make the pearl look less fuzzy.

Any feedback on the pearl and/or the raw emerald would be greatly appreciated! :-)
I expect that I will have to re-do the cut emerald from scratch, though, it doesn't make me happy.

The pearl is looking better. The raw emerald looks like it's being lit from behind.

The emerald looks somehow... not right. Although I got no idea what exactly is wrong with it. Pixeling translucent gemstones is something I often tried but I never was really successful at it.

The emerald has too big and sharp contrast differences. It shouldn't go so dark.

Hi,

updated raw emerald, with demo picture.

Less contrast, better transparency (I think). Plus, the edges look a little more sensible now.

Dimond, I would like to draw other gems too-- but I haven't even managed to get one of them right, so this may take a while. ;-)

I liked the first version more - it was exactly how the emerald is supposed to look.
