Re: Dark Knights Helm
The top one looks like it is made of snowflake obsidian and the bottom one looks like it is made out of a black marble. I kind of like the concept.
EDIT: Infact, the top one almost looks complete in shading.

Lazy bum.
Re: Dark Knights Helm
Well, now you have an outline you've produced and filled it with basically random.
Even if you do achieve something this way, I'd say your work methods have gone the wrong direction here.

Re: Dark Knights Helm
I disagree. I understand the texture idea but the lighting is still off. Both pics only have a little shading to bring out some detail but the rest looks flat do to no high lighting from the sun. You were really close before just that you had it light from the south west but it look like the light was on the ground.kr0n05931 wrote:The top one looks like it is made of snowflake obsidian and the bottom one looks like it is made out of a black marble. The light is from the south west and in the sky. so the Top and left most of the helm is hit the hardest from the sun. Your one back facing was hitting the bottom and that is wrong.

Re: Dark Knights Helm
guys i used paint bucket patterns and i thought i might be able to edit them a bit and make a very rough version of my helm because i think it looks to smooth and it need to be tough =D
don you know a newer version is being made it just takes alot of redoing and im always thinking of new ways to change itBlack Don wrote:I disagree. Re: Dark Knights Helm
That's definitely going into the right direction.
Don't be afraid to use strong contrast differences next to each other. Pixel art is essentially about fooling the eye when you look from a bit further away.

Re: Dark Knights Helm
When you want it to be more rough use fewer shades and use manual dithering to blend one shade of color to another. The result is automatically a rough appearance.
Tsugumos pixel art tutorial describes this technique in its third chapter.

Re: Dark Knights Helm
You should better read the rest of the tutorial and not just look at the pictures. The headline of the chapter you got the images from ("The gradient tool is evil!") should already tell you Tsugumos opinion about this kind of workflow.

Re: Dark Knights Helm
I don't like tutorials that use sarcasm to make a point. Unless read very carefully it can be confusing.

Re: Dark Knights Helm
Of course you can use the gradient tool as a basis and then fix it up by hand, but that's more work than just doing it properly by hand from the beginning. Also gradient artifacts are quite likely with this approach.
How you want your workflow to be is up to you and we shouldn't really care too much if the end result is good. This however is not.
