I'm curious, but how do you know he was botting?
Perhaps he was most likely AFK? Or perhaps he forgot to log out?
It is just a suggestion.

If you move/attack and don't respond to talk, you're considered a bot.

Chicken is already playing again with this char.
He said he wasn't botting and I (not only) therefore didn't do a char wipe, but a level reset to 1.

I can see how some people can consider other players botting for those reasons, jaxad0127.
But, I am just suggesting that a player may forgot to log out or AFK if not responding, and there are other reasons too. The reason I'm suggesting this is because I want you and others to keep that in mind before assuming that s/he may be a bot.

Katze: Also, why not follow Platyna's advice on how to report a bot instead of taking a screenshot of what you assume may be a bot, because that isn't proof at all if what you assume may be a bot.

If they aren't moving, they won't be bothered. If someone is AFK and their character is moving or attacking, they are botting.

Was chicken attacking monsters?
There isn't any current proof that he was.
I also think that Katze's punishment of reducing his level to 1 was not appropriate.
This is my opinion. I do not want to start a flame war with anyone with my comments, therefore I do not want to continue this discussion any longer.

If you get caught botting, you get permanently banned. After that, you can request a character reset to get your account back.

I definitely saw chicken attacking. It was only that no monster was near when I took the screenshot. And I know that a screenshot it is no proof. But I think it's good for documentation.

Proving that people are botting is why we now have GMs that go out and find the bots them selves. No one could ever prove that someone is botting with a screen shot.

The "botting" policy in this game could use some work. I have a friend who i would like to start playing. However, he is suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease and is nearly immobile. His only means of input through his computer is by opening a separate program for his virtual keyboard and slowly directing the cursor around the screen using his motion sensing software which tracks his cursor through miniscule head movements. From instant messaging him....I can honestly say the 3 minutes you gave the character to respond may not have been enough. Remember that not everyone is necessarily as healthy, cognizant, and maybe even LITERATE enough to respond to in game text messages. Perhaps some kind of client tracer and a provision in the ToS/EULA for TMW to do some minimal "spying" on the machine it's being played on might not be a bad idea.

To show a GM that you are alive you don't have to answer with a full sentence. You just have to show a minimal change in behavior to show that you noticed someone speaking to you. Stopping attacking, speaking just a single letter etc. is enough to show that you are at the computer. When your friend is unable to do this I wonder how he can play the game in the first place.

Oh, it would indeed be a VERY bad idea.

1. We believe in open source and the right of the user to modify software for his needs. A software which stops the user from doing so would be against this premise.
2. we also believe in the users right on privacy and not being spied at.
3. Client sided anti cheat protection is insecure by design. You can not trust any kind of software which runs on the clients machine. Code executed by the users machine is under his control. The question if an anti cheat tool which requires a client-sided component can be hacked is not "is it possible" but "with how much effort".
4. Client sided cheat protection, when it is supposed to be at least remotely efficient agains the most crude cheats, needs to interact closely with the operating system. TMW is supposed to be as operating system independent as possible.
5. How do you want to detect a weight lying on the keyboard with software?
  • former Manasource Programmer
  • former TMW Pixel artist
  • NOT a game master

Please do not send me any inquiries regarding player accounts on TMW.

You might have heard a certain rumor about me. This rumor is completely false. You might also have heard the other rumor about me. This rumor is 100% accurate.

But it may be, as i can do, that i start attacking monster, and then i go looking forum. It's not booting since i dont use any program. I just let my char fight monser, only one, and i come back in few minutes (maybe seconds).

So if you see him killing only one monster, it may be that. I havent see it so i dont know, i just say that you have this on mind.
Uses Ubuntu 8.10 and The mana world 0.0.27.

While we are at it. Sometimes I initialize an attack and subsequently I go afk or browse the web until the fight is over. Is that illegal?
