It's easy for me to express why I play this game. I see TMW as a sort of... IRC channel with graphics.

An IRC Channel is open to people who share similar interests. It could be gardening... Linux... whatever. Then add the fun of joint missions and real human interaction... and the mix is quite compelling.

A part of life is shared experiences. People consider TV shows they've watched a shared "experience" and follow TV characters... almost as if they're real. I'm personally not into "TV", though I do enjoy a well-written movie from time to time.

With MMPORG's like TMW, the "show" is determined by what we do instead of what actors do. I've frequently laughed out loud during our on-line conversations... I've met people from all over the globe... I've learned a lot about people and about where they're from... something I don't always trust when it's brought to me by the TV.

Is it an escape from reality? If it is, then it's a better escape than TV or movies because the interaction with others is real. This kind of interaction reminds me of Citizen's Band Radio or (again) IRC channels, some of which I've followed with hearty interest. The difference between IRC channels and CB radio is listening versus typing.

I hate to be a "me too", but I have to admit that BobSongs has expressed my viewpoint more concicely than I would have been able to.

It's very compelling and participatory compared to many alternatives, especially if you have the ability to contribute to the project and change the environment you are interacting in.

Never accuse, just warn. Like what Crush has said several times, that if you neglect your education or work for tmw, or when you start to think of tmw as your work, then you're showing signs of online game addiction. That made me reflect on what I was doing last year.

Or just mentioning that some old players have spent too much time in the game and that it can cause serious trouble in real life, so all players should be careful. A general warning may be better than a personal one, I think.

I agree that in the end, people can only help themselves with this, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's nothing we can do.
