Wish it would be so easy...

Code interoperability is the key.

It is really annoying when you write code like

Code: Select all

object->setColor(col);
which fails to compile and after a half hour of troubleshooting you realize that the guy who wrote the class of Object named the method setColour.

Even more awkward situations arrive when you use classes from people with different dialects together:

Code: Select all

object->setColour(otherObject->getColor());
So there is no multilingual compiler?

Color and Colour are different strings, so no, compilers won't let you use them interchangeably.

See, USA spellings are simpler, and less likely for people to make errors like above. Also like it or not, in computers/online 70 to 80% of content is in English, and it is mostly American English. As an ESL instructor in China, many students claim to find British variations more difficult to understand. Also, here is an article with more information on the topic.

Welcome and congratulations on not only your first post but your first *vote* as well :)

I really don't see the problem if we go either way. As far as I'm concerned there are more important things than discussing the differences and merits of two dialects which are in any case mutually understandable. If the importance of this does not exceed the constraints of our current developers time, then just implement it the way everyone else does, en_US and en_UK language files for NPC scripts. It is my humble opinion that the NPC scripts should maintain the British version of English, which I can assure you is not only more concise and true to its etymological heritage but is also considered an authoritative resource base for all child branches. That being said, we should still have respect for other languages/dialects/religions/race/cultures and it would be downright dehumanizing to humiliate a given civilization and their people based on the pretext of popularity, global propaganda and a multitude of other angles previously specified, some of which, to my dismay, appears to be abhorring distasteful.

I've mentioned before that the dialects in question are mutually understandable, and many would agree that it would be relatively easy to stick to one dialect over another. With that in mind, its no big deal if the NPC scripts follow various dialects, however, a consensus needs to be reached for the dialect of the source code. I feel, that is a topic for the developers that work on the source code and not the public at large.

There should be an expiration date when the votes are tallied and a final consensus reached.

OK, now for a slightly more serious reply to this thread.

I think there are two sides to this discussion.

CODE
All code should be made to a standard, for this, I think American English would be the better, as for the most part (AFAIK), most other scripting/code languages utilise American English as a base.

NPC DIALOG
NPC dialog shouldnt matter what dialect they use, providing that all the dialog for a particular NPC is the same.

Sound fair enough!

Yes. We already vary the NPCs somewhat.

Hi Jax*, note our resident game master's post. Come to think of it, it is the game masters responsibility to influence topics relating to game experience. NPC dialects is one of them, I would imagine.

Actually, I believe the issue is not so much relating to the game experience as it is to how TMW is programmed. IMHO what English dialect the NPCs use is not too important, so long as it matches the personality of the NPC. i.e. Old English Gentleman (British) speaking in Aussie English wouldn't be appropriate.

So the issue is something the code developers would have to decide upon; it's not something anyone else has much of a right to say about - it won't affect them either way. However my opinion lies with the graph Jax posted.

GMs enforce game rules, not develop game content.
