Just hold left and up and your char will move in that direction unless there is something blocking.

There are a few maps, especially in the Western desert where going diagonal would allow you to "slip" past important obstacles.

So currently it appears that diagonal movement operates like moving horizontally and vertically at the same time. If there are obstacles something in the way either above and to the side or below and to the side you can't slip diagonally between them.

Might be because they're trying to do it while holding alt, which won't work in the default setup in newer clients.

Holding left and up together should make you move NW. If you're holding alt, it might not work with newer clients.
