If you are starting from the beginning w/o a more powerful character handing down stuff for equipment, then it is definitely worth it. Building an Iron Shield takes two rare drops (infantry helmets), 10 ore, a leather patch (1 skin + 300 gp) and 20k. Getting all this together is something to aim for after getting the bone knife, unless you are already powerful and can hand down equipment. The wooden shield can be acquired before level 40, after getting both the scythe and the forest bow. It might be a good way to build towards the bone knife. As for the short sword, I usually skip it unless I buy the keys and get a couple people to help lead me to the treasure chest.

Here is my "no assistance" quest grind upto level 40 in how I do the order:
Vincent: 1000gp = dagger, unless it is acquired via drops before the quest is completed.
Sandra: Get the scorpion stingers through grinding and the red scorpion through monster points
Hinnak: Get the pinkie antenna for the scythe
Alan: Get the forest bow (grinding on bats for cash)
Jack: Get the wooden shield (grinding on bats for cash)
Agostine: Get winter gloves + fur boots (ginding on bats, get a pair of boots via red slime kill)
Kfahr: Get bone knife

After this, depending on your build, there are a few ways to go. I consider these archer/warrior quests. For wizards, I'd go up to Alan for the forest bow, then start completing the magic quests. More bat grinding for cotton boots, buying the silk robe probably can happen faster than Agostine's quests to get access to Lora Tay's quest, though the extra XP Lora Tay provides can be quite helpful.

This is just how I do it and the wooden shield helps a great deal for getting the power necessary to get both the setzer and the iron shield.
Current character is "Abolish".

Or you could just grind on bats, you know, and buy all of it and not bother with any other grinding. In any case, it is definitely faster to grind bats and buy the wood shield as opposed to gathering the 40 logs or buying the 40 logs to get it. Same for Forest Bow (which you can buy in stores for 20k, or used for 15k).

By "no assistance" I even mean avoiding the player market. The grinding on bats is there because it is one of the fastest ways to get the necessary cash to pay off the NPC to get the items, in addition to the resources that must be acquired.

But if a player wants to rely on the player market or friends to help them along, more power to them.

In my opinion...40 logs could build a raft....I think he's just being wasteful with the material that he admits himself he wouldn't go out and get because he was a chicken
