I think that we need one person which will be accepting or rejecting graphics. I think that is only way to reach "universal The Mana World style". IMO if some pix goes out of style it should be stored in some kind of "storage". Maybe someone will improve it later.
what do you think?

btw That's off-topic discussion? Isn't it?

Talaroc: I'm really sorry to hear that, solve your problems first, take your time.

Necromus: you know you can still ask Rotonen to know what's needed. Anyway I find your sprites very nice. If only we could direct your talent into something we need and you could be more reliable then it would be easier to create graphics for TMW.

i & nym: again Rotonen is the art director, so he has got the final decision on which graphics to accept. Anyway if someone wants to volounteer no problem. I just think that first of all we have to complete the player spritesheet, this way every artists will have got a reference for the creation of npcs for example.

Yes, Rotonen is the art director, but doesn't mean we can't try and help him. This is a F/OSS project, we _need_ to help eachother out :)

Sure, most of all because Rotonen is very busy this period that's why I also agree on having someone helping him.

And just as I was going to put out a "help wanted" sign..

We'll need to re-coordinate the art department in any case. This is a long term project and I'll be leaving for military service in July 2006 and hence I probably cannot be the permament head of art. And there's also the issue with low yield results lately, so yeah, help is pretty much appreciated.

I'd say start a seperate thread, because this isn't the right thread for this.
I think I'd like to help a bit although I'll have my exams next year, so I'll have to work hard on that too. Which means I don't expect to be fully active.

But it isn't the time for that, so I'm not starting the thread just yet. Sometime in March would be a suitable time.

Hey folks. I'm back!

No new stuff to show you on this post; just upgraded to Tiger and I'm still in the process of retrieving and reorganizing all of my files (did a complete backup/erase). Once I get things back in order, and get back all my junk, I can start showing you new fun little eye-candy again. Till then, I'm back on the forum offering advice and irritation once again.

Boy, do I also love being caught away from my connection when I don't expect to be.

Grr...

Anyhow, here we go. Something went funky with the sword swing sprites, but the stand/walk/sit set is DONE. I put placeholders in place of the now-missing sword swing frames. The frame size is 30x60, encompassing everything in the sheet except the little markers separating the frames.
Sprites:

Sheet: Image
Forward walk: Image
Backward walk: Image
Sideways walk: Image

Hopefully, this is in time for the new release. If not, well, there'll be a more complete sheet (notably including attacks, getting hit, death, and possibly even a female version of the sheet) for the next one.
question for you tal and tmw in general. I know the liscense this is under you can more less use anything from the game right...

well I was wondering if you cared if I used the above sprite set for my game... I wanted to use that just as a base... even if it is like I said about im still going to ask cause thats how I am I would never use it without your permission. I wanted to use it as a base and then do paperdolling and all ...

so let me know thanks

I think you can use it as long as you let everyone else use it from your project too.

And I also think all of our artists would only be complimented by the fact that their work is liked by many and used by many.

yeah no way would I use something of someone elses and not let others used it... of course unless the original person wanted it that way.

That would be good but still going to wait for his response since its his work.

Also it wont look at all like Mana World so that wont be a problem.

All art released as part of TMW falls under the GPL. Under that license using this art in another game probably means your game should fall entirely under the GPL too, as it will be (partly) derived from TMW.

If you do not want to do this you're always free to ask the author for permission as you're doing already. Note that the above player set was not released with TMW yet, so GPL is not implied, so it would be a good idea to ask the author anyway.

Wow, cool, heh. :!:
Quite a compliment, here.

Yeah, go ahead and use them. Although GPL might not apply just yet since they haven't made it into the game yet, I made them with the intent to release under GPL. I ask two things, for using my graphics:
1. That your project also be released under GPL, or, that it be made clear that, at the least, those particular sprites are under the GPL.
2. That I be given attribution for having made them somewhere. Doesn't have to be intrusive or anything, of course, just a mention in the credits or something, under my real name (Ryan Voss).

So yeah. There'll be more on the way from me in the very near future, and that's my policy regarding all of my graphical work, so if you want to hang out and grab a more complete version, feel free.

What's the game you're working on, by the way?
