great fps with wine

Post by skeptisk »

I had the windows version of tmw installed already and while running ubuntu I thought that I might as well try it with wine.

much to my surprise I got about about 120 fps running the windows version through wine in ubuntu compared to about 80 with native linux version in ubuntu.

anyone got an idea why it is so?
anyone care to replicate it?

Hmm I could try it when I'll have some spare time, I don't have (and never used) wine on my ubuntu box.

Maybe you're using the OpenGL Mode in the nativ version and in wine software only.

both are standard versions. win32 one from download page and linux-version from repo.

don't think opengl is enabled in any of them. (chechbox is greyed out in both)

in win32 I get roughly 80 fps with native client.

It's remarkable that the Windows version would run smoother on Linux than the native Linux version. It'd be good to look into why this happens, and to get more benchmarks like this.

You can enable/disable OpenGL by setting "opengl" to 1 or 0 in your config.xml. In the CVS version it is now possible to use the OpenGL checkbox in the setup screen. On Linux you'll have to remember to pass --with-opengl to configure to build in OpenGL support. I think we'll have this as default from 0.0.17, then you could still do --without-opengl for disableing it.

I had better performance with wine back in 0.0.9: it was better than either native w32 or linux.

I switched to the 686-optimized kernel and now I got about ~150fps with wine.

and ~75-80fps in native client.

is there some kind of frame rate limiter that gets broken in wine?

or is this just a freak of nature?

It's been the same for quite a while so I guess that we're looking at something as logical as the Rutherford experiment reflected on the macroscopic world..
