[WIP] Savannah tileset (the return)

Post by arikel »

I couldn't find the original thread where Modanung's work for the savannah tileset was first posted, if it ever was, so i started a new one.
Here's the original work from Modanung :

On that basis, here's where i went so far :

I think i know what still needs to be worked on (top and bottom transitions, texturing/shading, tiles variations, OMG it's too straight, argl i can still see the grass grid if i look well, etc.). All right... Now if anyone could show me ways to texture / shade the earth cliffs nicely, that would be great. Words can help, and did help often, but by showing me i mean actually opening the GIMP and pixeling for a bit longer than 30 seconds (unless you're really good), that would really help much more there.

Heck yeah! I had a plan for the Savannah, actually. After Hallowe'en, if I ever get around to Hallowe'en, I'd like to work on the Farmland which belongs to the North-East (anyone interested, PM me and we can talk about it on November 1st). And East of that, of course, is the Savannah - lots of tilesets and quests and mapping and monsters before the Savannah needs doing, but if you'd like to work on the Savannah set until the Farmland work commences that'd be grand. And then, if you want, we can do the Farmland.

Anyone interesting in working on Hallowe'en, Farmland, or Savannah - PM me and I'll contact you as soon as possible. But that may not be until I get back.

Just a little update to show how it looks so far... I also tried to come up with some savannah tree concepts, as shows the mapping test...

According to our mapping guidelines, map objects like trees and rocks should not have strong outlines.

Please do not send me any inquiries regarding player accounts on TMW.

I love how this tileset is taking shape, though.

Any other comment on the savannah itself, Crush?

Best regards.

EDIT:
Did you know about this issue, Arikel?

Hi Bertram,

I didn't know about this issue (not a mantis user at all), but i had contacted Modanung (thanks to FotherJ and Bjorn) before starting to work on this savannah tileset, and he was very kind to send me everything he had related to that. That's pretty much everything there is in the link you mention, except the savannah houses, thanks for that, i'll try to give a shot to completing this one too.
Thanks for your interest and support.

Hello arikel, here's my suggestion:
- green speckles (suggesting moss)
- cracks (maybe even larger parts having slid halfway down)
- conglomerate (but with more rocks in the wall)
- bottom: fallen rocks and dirt
(- small plants & vines growing on the wall)
(- top to bottom: gradually more dirt, and less visible stones, suggesting that rain has washed the dirt downwards, and the bare stones remain on the rims)

(i didn't draw the suggestions in brackets)
