[WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
[WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
Here's another tileset i'm working on. I used Len's desert ground tiles, i'm also working on some transition tiles for different ground tiles, to be able to make smooth transitions from the old desert and forest to the new desert and the savannah.
The tiling is not perfect, but it's not as bad is it may seem from a quick mapping test : some tiles that look the same are actually slightly different, shading-wise, and picking the right tile should generally give decent results (in short : if it's not tiling well, look if there's not a similar tile that would suit better there).
There might still be a couple of missing tiles for some effects, but nothing that the use of a second layer on a map couldn't solve. I'll also use the remaining spaces to add some variation tiles.

Hi Arikel!
Nice preview!
Maybe a little more variations on the sand, and you're there, IMHO.
Best regards.

Re: [WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
Those cliffs look, while definitely better than the existing desert cliffs, a bit boring. How about going for less round and more polygonal stones? They are also suffering a bit from pillow shading (http://www.natomic.com/hosted/marks/mpat/shading.html) and too visible outlines (http://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Guidelines).

And do not be afraid of using 64x64px tiles (if needed).
Re: [WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
Trying new shapes for the stones... I hope they look less boring. I also tried to get the shading better.
I tried to make some new sand tiles for some variations, the one you can see there still needs grid killing, i'll work on it, as well as on the transitions to other sand ground tiles.

Awesome, but why not put some sand on the bottom of themountain? with wild, the wild is pushed into the rock... and down on the bottom of this rock, may put a little line of sand? Just imo : x
It's really awesome ^^

Re: [WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
Those cliffs look very similar to those from the woodland tileset.

Re: [WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
They are both 8-way and have the same outline and smooth wall geometry approach.
This message used to be meaningful.
Re: [WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
Do it's really a problem? A '8way' is awesome for the mapper, tileset like that are more needed, and I dont know why you are as that chocked O.o

Re: [WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
Hi there,
IMHO, there is nothing sufficiently chocking here. But as always, I'd be glad to see demos using this tileset in available maps.
Good work
Best regards.

It is a 8-way straight flat wall with texturing geometrywise.Reid wrote:Do it's really a problem? A '8way' is awesome for the mapper, tileset like that are more needed, and I dont know why you are as that chocked O.o

I've been asked to confirm that they're not a ripoff, and no, they do appear to look uniquely drawn.Crush wrote:Those cliffs look very similar to those from the woodland tileset.

Crush, you are not happy to get new tileset?

Re: [WIP] Desert Cliffs Tileset
Interesting to see what kind of panic I seem to have caused just by a little throwaway remark.
With "they look similar" I was not implying that it is a ripoff. And even when that were the case it wouldn't matter. It's one of our own graphics, after all. I would even encourage to create new graphics based on old ones because it ensures consistency.
I was just wondering if it isn't redundant to create two brown sandstone cliffs with 8-direction tiling.
