It's always been my opinion that scammers, and anyone who creates characters simply to grief and/or annoy other players should be blocked.

In my limited experience running a public TMW server, a small IRC network, and a forum or two I've noticed a few things.

Scammers travel in packs. If there is one in a house, most likely their brother/sister/friend/etc originating from the same location will see all the fun they are having and try to follow suit. Easy to block. Block em for a week and let them mull it over, work it out themselves.

Contrast this to griefers/trolls, who tend to travel alone (when not in their mom's basement). These guys are either very easy to block, or bloody persistent.

The approach I use involves a slow escalation of countermeasures. The simplest one that's effective is what stays in place.
  1. Make fun of them. It may seem unprofessional, but it lightens the mood and occasionally causes them to desist
  2. Ban them from the server using standard methods.
  3. Ban all accounts associated with their IP from the server
  4. Filter their IP address
  5. Filter their subnet (depending on just HOW dynamic their IP is. 1 min grepping logs and using whois can tell you)
  6. Filter out traffic from their ISP within their geographical area using a GeoIP DB
  7. Global Thermonuclear War
Note that filtering IP addresses (or chunks of networks) should normally only be considered a temporary measure.

Is this really serious, or is it some big joke, because surely Arian needs banning if he is hacking...

Yeah, you shouldn't trust Arian Asimi, or Pleurat.A either. Usually newbs get tricked, so if you are a newb, make sure you watch out. Hackers have different ways of tricking you, such as you giving them your items or saying they'll lvl you up etc.

Crush, not alt_p... just p. Often when I think I've hit the enter key and I haven't, I hit the p key soon afterwards. It may be possible to change this in Setup, I haven't looked, but that's what it is by default (on Ubuntu, anyway).

~yep, nearly eighty screenshots...

P.s

Er, this is a bit offtopic, isn't it?
