A simple hat which says AFK on it will do.

Yeah. It has been suggested like 3 times and I believe it is a good idea.

I do not think a hat is appropriate. But if such thing where to exist (AFK hat) I would only see to it a temporary fix until manserv comes to a better conclusion.

The question is
Is the problem big enough to waste any time on, when its just going to need to be redone later?

nope It would be more reasonable to make a player talk post and come to a conclusion stance for an existing afk hat ( maybe the grad hat? )

I dress up as Naked Knight whenever I'm AFK, but I don't know about other people.
