As a point of fact, this game was developed by those that do not natively speak English. It is my belief that the reason for their decision to use English is because English is considered to be the language of business. Having one language be the official language offers everyone a common foundation on which to communicate.

If speaking english is not an option, we as GM's are equipped to help deal with that. I often use Google Translate to help communicate with non english speakers.

This was not a case of someone merely not understanding, it was willful and intentional disregard for the rules, and as such, was punished.

Often members of a non english speaking group will say 'hello' in another language and we will ignore something of that nature. We do understand that often such one word greetings or answers are typed without thought. One statement in a foreign language will often get someone an unofficial reminder. If they do it again, we give an official reminder/warning. Often if it is suspected that the person doesnt understand english, we will attempt to warn them in their native language.

I say all of this as an explanation of our thoughts and procedures. It is my belief that the more transparency we have regarding these matters the better. If someone has a question on a rule or ruling I welcome a whisper in game or pm here.

When you want a server where you can speak French, then create one.

French people are as welcome in the TMW community like people from every other nationality. But unfortunately we have to insist on you speaking English, because there is a very good reason why we can not tolerate other languages than english in public.

1. When you have an online community, you have a responsibility for it. You must not allow harassment or unlawful activity. When you do, you can be made liable in court.
2. When you do not understand what people are talking about, you can not make sure that unlawful activity is not happening. So you must assume that anything you do not understand is the worst possible.

When you communicate in a language we don't understand, how can we know that you are not insulting people? You will now surely tell us "Get a translator. French isn't such an exotic language". You might be right that it shouldn't be hard to find a game master who is fluent enough at French and English to decide what's an insult and what isn't. But when we do this for the French, where do we stop? Portuguese? Spanish? German? Dutch? Italian? Swedish? Polish? Czech? Danish? Belgian? Finish? Russian? Egyptian? Greek? Hebrew? Farsi? Zulu? We would need to manage a gigantic GM team to cover every language people want to communicate in. This is simply not possible.

Doloy,

tmw doesn't need more GMs, users should know only one thing: English in public, its the main thing and they can read about it in the start, so the translators are not needed for it.
i hope you see what i mean :)

cheers, dark
