There was a restart to expand the reward time to 6th January, also a bugfix of the check wether your character is allowed to start the quest.

So two questions: is there an alternate reward for aiding balthasar and does the color/style of wrapping paper have any affect on anything?

Yes; No.

I made a purple wrapping paper just in case there was a better reward for doing so - in a way it's a bit of let-down that there wasn't, as it was expensive. On the other hand, that's part of the interest. We may feel like fools for wasting time and gp on something like that when it's not necessary, but it does make it more interesting.

Thanks to the developers of the quest! I enjoyed it and since I had a lot of what was needed, I didn't ignore family during the holidays trying to complete it. Was perfect for me and underscores again a wisdom about Mana World: Save everything - even the most useless item may be required in a special event.
