A little experiment report:
I went form lvl 40 to lvl 41 solely on kills in the lamp snake cave. Went through about 3000 arrows (Dex only 35) and killed about 500 snakes (assuming about a 2:1 ratio, snakes:shrooms).
No shorts.
I'll keep trying.
