I checked out the newest alpha client of dawn of daria. I must say that it is a really interesting project. The tiles look really professional. I don't think that i have seen them somewhere else and they fit together really well, so i think they made them themself.

The engine got a lot interesting features:
-pixel based movement
-day and night change (although a bit static)
-Smooth light sources.
-Trees and buildings become transparent when you move behind them. It happens quite softly. Really a nice effect. We should maybe consider doing something similar.
-Different grounds make different footstep sounds

But on the downside:
-The player characters aren't animated at all (while some monsters are animated)
-Combats are really boring. You can't do anything besides reading text.
-There doesn't seem to be a character system or equipment yet.

But it still is a very promising project with a lot of potential.

I also like their lighting system. I'll try and play it sometime soon.

Dawn of Daria seems a nice game but the players are so static...

Hola, I'm new in the game, this is my first post.

I know an argentinian MMORPG called Argentum Online.
http://ao.alkon.com.ar
The 2d graphics are not very good but it's very entertaining and actually it possesses a lot of players (300 aprox. only in the official server) and a big variety of servers.

Here are some screens: http://ao.alkon.com.ar/imagenes.php
(in these screens the inventory, stats, console have been cut)

And if you want to play it here are the necesary downloads:
http://ao.alkon.com.ar/contador.php?cual=20 (15 MB)
http://ao.alkon.com.ar/contador.php?cual=21
http://ao.alkon.com.ar/contador.php?cual=24

It's open source http://sourceforge.net/projects/morgoao
More info of the game in this last link.

That's all for now, nos vemos.

I dont want to rain on your parade but I find those graphics butt ugly. They probably remind me of some old games and not in a good way.

The graphics aren't good, that's true... yet I think "butt ugly" are not the words I would discribe this game's looks with. The graphics don't hurt my eyes, which I have with a lot of other games. There are some magic effects that seem out of date because they are black in some parts where they should be transparent, although some sprites do use transparency.
In some cases I doubt if their graphics are genuine because there are some big differences in quality, can't be sure though.

I heard you were talking about TMW forks.
Let me introduce my game : http://www.evolonline.info
I'm using TMW for this game. Sprites, (somes) items and SFX are yours. Tiles are from RPG Maker XP and a friend created music ressources. Lot of your server scripts inspired me two...

It's a french game but I have'nt traduced it from sources yet. I'me waiting for the 0.0.22.1 before starting it.

You can see screenshots here : http://www.evolonline.info/shots/
And If you wanna play, just drop me a private message and I'll send you an invitation (it's a beta test only for invited persons...).

I'm waiting for your feedbacks...

I don't understand french. What's exactly your fork? It looks the same except for the graphics wich are copyrighted. I doubt is legal to make a fork with GPL content and copyrighted content... Apart from the graphics I don't see what's new.

Then why not contribute to our project rather than start a fork?

Well, when he releases everything under the GPL (what means to publish the sourcecode, too) I see no problem in using our graphics.

But I am not sure how Enterbrains copyright license of their graphics looks. They might consider them public domain and allow anyone to use them for any project under any license. Or they might restrict the copyright of their graphics to people who bought their software or even only for projects that are created using their software. These cases would make them incompatible with the GPL.

Using the RPGMaker graphics for non-rpgmaker games might be illegal. You should check that.
Pajarico wrote:Then why not contribute to our project rather than start a fork?
Some people maybe want to enjoy their freedom and create their own game based on their own visions without having to discuss everything with a team. It also annoys me from time to time to argue with the team about every small detail. But on the other hand when you are part of a team you got a lot more work force and a lot more creative ideas. Both has its pros and cons.

But because he has to release his content under the GPL too, we can maybe use some of the contents of Evol as Evol uses our content. I would like to hear the music his friend created. When it is good we could use it.

But unfortunately the download page doesn't seem to work.

I thought the point about forks was when there was big discrepancies between developers and there was no other solution than split. That's why I ask. I don't remember seeing KaTSuo trying to contribute first, I might be wrong.

About the graphics: If I understood, he is using GPL graphics and under another license, and he tries to release it in a single package under a single license? Or he will only release the GPL parts?

Everyone has the right to create a fork of a GPL project as long as the fork is released under the GPL, too.

It doesn't matter if he did anything for the original project or not.
