Would be interested to know how the atlas improved this.
I remember the argument with particle effects. What I understood is Manaplus now limited them to 1000, but I'm not opposed to a reduction in number as some kinda overload the area.

Actually, all measurements were done with atlas enabled, so all this not-so-good state of things happens with atlas enabled. As far as I understood 4144, one of problems is that at the end of day, each particle is a separate draw call. So it looks like most of troublesome things are those where many particles appear on screen. On side note, I recently met some player who got crappy FPS in Hurns which confirms this guess. Player runs powerful CPU, etc but Intel graphics. And fairly old Debian 6. My guess would be that particle effects with such amount of draw calls are able to piss off ancient/crappy/bugged GPU drivers. Because it worked okay outside hurns but severe FPS drop in the city. And as I can guess, as part of graphic set update, particles in hurns near menhir were improved, right? It seems to look better than before, isn't it?

After doing some extra measurements I noticed my (fairly powerful) system would start to choke and fail to fit real-time at about ~1400 draw calls/second. This usually never happens, even with ManaPlus. But I found some edge cases which can actually slow down even my system. Arrow hail in busy place can peak to about 1500 draw calls per second (absolute high-score, no other engines were able to get close to that). This is enough to cause short lag spikes even in my system and obviously could make weaker systems far more unhappy.
P.S. on side note I can admit Debian haves especially old and crappy opensource graphic drivers stack. Other Linux based systems are usually using more modern kernels/related libs/MESA so they tend to give less headache. But debian so inclined on "stable" things that their opensource graphic stack is a mess and can just give some stable ... headache. Its really old, bugged and slow "by default" when it comes to anything OpenGL related.

Looks like the Soul Menhir Mainly coupled with warps in Hurnscald.
We can always turn down the number of particles the major offenders do.

After the GM event today some skeletons showed up for a party at the Hurnscald Inn.
The chaos then continued on other places around the woodlands.
