The Avora Project

Hello folks,
We have founded a new project based on TMW. We decided to use eAthena, as well.
There are enough projects which are using content forked of TMW, so we decided to create completely different graphics, music, maps...
The theme of Avora is sci-fi thus a completely other theme than the TMW one.
Every project needs diligent people and any contribution is more than welcome.
A website of the project can be found here:

Our current and primary task is to create a player sprite sheet and to set up a "demo" version of our game to show that we are a serious project.
I look forward to your ideas/feedback/suggestions about the project.
Regards

I am helping avora as a pixel artist and technical consultant since several weeks ago. I can recommend this project to everyone who would like to do something different than fantasy.

First off: sci-fi is a type of fantasy.
If you need any technical help, I'll be glad to help.

If you want nitpick the word "fantasy" is usually abbreviated from "
high fantasy".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_fantasy wrote:High fantasy or epic fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy that is set in invented or parallel worlds. High fantasy originated with the writings of William Morris, George MacDonald, and Lord Dunsany, and came to fruition through the work of authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis whose major fantasy works were published in the 1950s. [1] High fantasy, along with sword and sorcery, has become one of the two genres most commonly associated with the general term fantasy.
High fantasy and sci-fi intersect quite nicely. What you mean is fantasy is generally refers to the so-called "sword and sorcery" subgenre.

None of the descriptions or examples on the wikipedia page are sci fi. But yes, that is what I mean. Happy now?

Avora: Any reasons why you are going with eAthena instead of manaserv?

I was about asking the same question. Why eAthena?

I am always in conflict with the decision whether we should use eA or manaserv.
Sure, manaserv has innumerable advantages...
I guess I am not sufficiently informed about manaserv.
We could still change to manaserv but we would need more technical help.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Advantages of (our) eAthena:
-Proven technology
-Stable and quite free of bugs in the core features (Unless Mad Camel does some crazy hack again

)
-Scripting language is easy to learn
-TMW and its clones are just tapping the tip of the iceberg of its features
Disadvantages of (our) eAthena:
-Not made for running with the mana client
-Codebase which is hard to modify
-Scalability problems (account server becomes slow when there are too many accounts in the flatfile database)
-Bad security (cleartext passwords) and monolithic permission management
-Scripting language is not very powerful
Advantages of Manaserv:
-Made especially for the Mana client
-Flexible and easy to modify
-Encrypted passwords and role-based permission management
-You have a good relation to the developers so you can suggest new features to them directly

-Scripting language is a full-fledged programming language and thus very powerful
Disadvantages of Manaserv:
-Still in development so everything can change at any time without notice
-Not thoroughly tested, bugs and stability problems are likely to occur
-A lot of important features are still missing
-Scripting language is a bit bloated for its purpose and thus harder to learn
My general recommendation:
When you want a running game with players in a few weeks, go for eAthena.
When you are planning ahead for years rather than weeks go for Manaserv.

I'm seeing this project as a long term project (which means years...though i don't like to wait for some things, i dont mind to wait here, if this turns into a GOOD game), i don't know about you... Indeed i would like to make this game a really good one...

Focus on graphics and such for now. See what the situation looks like once you're ready to host.
