We have reached a point where we will be needing mappers.

Volunteers and other interested people, please report in here and we'll see where we take it from there.

Ok one question:

What is CR1?
sounds like "content release 1"?

Is that some kind of staging and testing server for the official themanaworld.org?
or something completely different?

Please help me with my questions.

CR1 means content release 1 and yes that will be the first release of maps, items and monsters for tmw with manaserv.

so manaserv!=eathena?
Will the content of the current running eathena server themanaworld.org be reused?

from what I know some graphics might be used, but maps won't be copied over.

So far we have not decided to reuse any content from TMW-eA, but the window for that is not closed. We have not yet evaluated what would fit and where.

As for mapping, see the related thread on the read only forum (a long read with a lot of references to other threads):

To sum it up: we currently have incomplete tilesets and a list of things to be mapped for CR1. What I want now is to have complete maps with the current tilesets. If the mappers need more tiles, they should make placeholder tiles and request them to be filled in properly by the tileset artists. Should be more motivating to see your work in-game as soon as you complete it.

Currently our collection of tilesets is not much to work with. So where to start mapping the island?

Academy - some tiles exist, but there is a split between old temple tiles and newer castle tiles. I say we go for the castle approach.
Academy interior - AFAIK no tiles yet (a pompous military academy, potentially recolors of outer walls)
Academy dungeon - AFAIK no tiles yet (human-made walls, not natural rock, potentially recolors of outer walls)

Village - some tiles and a nice centerpiece of a round market stall exist (fishing/merchant village, if I got it right)
Village harbor - a few tiles exist (the only way on/off the island)
Village interior - AFAIK no tiles yet (whatever fits the story of the village, get in contact with John P if unsure)

Beach/shoreline - some tiles exist, but nothing is usable as is yet
Caves - AFAIK no tiles yet (natural rock, please take into account the nature color palette of the island - things have to match up!)
Nature - we do have grass and that seems like it is going to peg the color palette for the nature for the island

So, we are going to need a tileset of green and black placeholder tiles to sketch out what is missing and to get at least "walls" to things:
Full black tile
Full green tile
8-way half green half black tiles

The biggest challenge is going to be matching up tilesets stylewise. So far the castle work seems to have a slightly shiny quality to it while the village is having a somewhat matte approach into portrayal of stone as an element.

Did I forget something here?

So, if the volunteering mappers are ready to go, grab tiled-qt, grab the tiles, grab one project and announce it here so two people do not work on the same thing and we'll see what we're getting.

Please read through http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopic.php?t=8399 before beginning. Yes, it is 11 pages long, but it is better than having to redo what you soloed on your own and losing motivation over it.

For the entire island? That'd mean you just reserved all outdoor maps. Please be a bit more specific.

A question about the tilesets:

Shouldn't they first be rearranged a bit (for some) and the author panel added?

I guess that if the tilesets are changed after the first maps are done, every maps depending on them will have to be redone anyway, which can be quite frustrating.

What do you think?
