Wanna know what is LINUX?(click here)
Linux is an operating system for your computer, in a similar fashion as the Microsoft Windows and Apple OSX operating systems on your computer. However, Linux is very different.
Linux started in 1992 by that time a university student named Linus Torvalds, who released his software for free, including full source code. Because Linus put its source code fully available, thousands of software developers worldwide dismissed it, makes changes and upgrades sent back to him!
Because of this effort for global cooperation, Linux is stable, extremely flexible and well supported. Operating system is the fastest growing in the world and is available free for you to install it on your computer! What sounds good? Even so it is!
Linux comes with thousands of free applications, which are maintained by thousands of volunteers around the world. These projects also release their source code, which means that they are also "open source".
"But how can they do all this for free?", Ask yourself. Communities Linux and open source make this free software because they love, not because they want to make money from them. They do this for the prestige, honor and because they believe in the ideals of open source.
It is important to note that due to the nature of open source software (the possibility of them will adapt as the soul) has many versions of Linux. This is very good because you can find a version which you suits you best! These different versions of Linux are called "distribution." This is because the creators of the various versions of Linux take and make their own changes to it, add packages and distribute them free. It may sound somewhat complicated, but it is not.
Software you may already be using
Did you know that you can be using free software and open up not knowing this at all? Open source applications are not just for Linux, but operate in a number of different operating systems including Windows and OSX.
Here is a list of software and products that use open source technology that you may already by using:
● Mozilla Firefox
● Mozilla Thunderbird
● Openoffice.org
● 7-zip
Why should I go to Linux?
● Viruses and spyware
● security and stability
● management packages
● features
● compatibility
● free (as in freedom / not as in price)
● Easy and intuitive
● choice and control
● Community
● pleasure!
What about my data?
One of the main obstacles when switching from closed source software is compatibility. Companies often create their own formats with closed code and make virtually impossible for anyone to know how the formats of their own. Despite this, Linux is compatible with almost all formats of data that exist and generally has a free program available that will read your data. For example, Microsoft Office documents are supported in OpenOffice.org package and Adobe Photoshop files are backed up in Gimp.
Linux supports and encourages the use of files with open source format. Currently, most documents are generated from Microsoft Office, however, these formats are closed source and proprietary. Using these formats before you place the whims of Microsoft, who can (and does) make its files formats incompatible with other applications including older versions of Microsoft Office!
The fact that these files are closed source, people are driven to buy new versions of Microsoft Office. While the office packages for open source can read and write Microsoft formats, the results sometimes are not perfect because we did not see the code for the function formats. However Linux does a great job with Microsoft Office files and of course you will understand that we can use and change them from one to another without any problem.
Other elements
● Windows software
● rivals Windows
● Games
● Microsoft Office compatibility
● Hardware
● Codes

EDIT:Im using Windows anyway but i just wanted to tell you what is linux(and i know that many of you know what it is?!

Re: Wanna know what is LINUX?(click here)
uhm, well ah, this game is completely licensed under GPL. This is the same License as Linux uses.
So most people here use actually Linux, because most people using Linux have the attitude to use free software...
I am not sure, if this is meant as news, or as a joke
Thanks JatLee for this information

I was writing a big comment on this, but I just wanna conclude the following: this might be the worst pro-linux post ive read in a while. Especially since you conclude with the fact that you use windows yourself...

Why? its Off-Topic, i can post here. And I think that when you're teaching people something, you should teach them something that is correct, and dont just post stuff without explaining why you post it?
I mean what the f is this list? How would this convince me to go to linux? Especially this one: ● free (as in freedom / not as in price), not free in price?! Couldnt you just copy paste the wiki or something...JatLee wrote:Why should I go to Linux?

Yeah.... go post this information on the Microsoft support site...
It'll be more useful there then here.
EDIT: Also disappointing that there is no mention of GNU

This recurrent debate really exhausts me, but I will try for some more ...Arphetic wrote:How would this convince me to go to linux ?

never had "noticeable" trouble since then (some hardware companies didn't help for good, they joined in the flush).

Re: Wanna know what is LINUX?(click here)
Actually as an uneducated IT guy I find that most companies that run Linux shops don't expect there applicants to necessarily have the degree that most windows based positions uselessly require. They teach very little if ANYTHING about Linux at the local Junior college. There is one DOS/UNIX CLI class. This means there's less noobs with paper for me to compete with. When I apply for a Linux position I figure that most of the people that I would be competing against would be more like me. When I apply for a position in a windows shop I know that every tom, dick, and harry with a MSCE is going after it as well and I don't have the creditably to back my knowledge. I ONLY apply for Linux jobs now and the demand is growing and the skilled user base is the same.
I now find myself going back to school just to get a degree and CCNA cert. The only thing I'm going to enjoy learning is the Cisco stuff.
Actually I think they have a class in Perl/Bash scripting as well that I might take later.

Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. Has anybody seen this princess I'm looking for?

i like the posting and its way better than scanning through 100pages if you want a neat and brief overview.
i use windows(xp), linux(debian) and osx(tiger) and regarding the debian machine, your description meets at least my intentions why to go for it very well, so, to put it short, imo some of the posts(and a signature) here are plain barefacedness.
