I want to raise some money so that the 4144/ManaPlus client can be formatted for Mac.

What are you doing? Offer a mac to 4144?
Or marring him?

Buying 4144 a mac is the probably most practical way to get ManaPlus on the mac. I highly doubt 4144 doesn't support mac for some vain reason, but more likely because there is no way he can test his builds.

That is, if he is willing to accept it

How much money exactly do you need?

And how exactly do you want to spend it? Do you want to pay a mac developer or do you want to provide 4144 with the hardware he needs?

Running OS X on any non-mac hardware is actually illegal from my understanding.

I think what yourmistakes is suggesting, is that the mac users who want to use ManaPlus run it in a VM.

That can work, but there are issues with doing that. TMW does seem to run fine in WINE last time I checked, and wine is for mac too, but I am unsure of its current status.

I running Manaplus nativ under Linux and via VMwareFusion in a VM both works good
Hardware is a Macbook Alu with Core duo 2,06Ghz and 4GB Ram. With an DualBoot LinuxMint10 and MacOSX10.5.8
The Performance from Manaplus in the VM with MacOSX is near 80-90% to the nativ Version under Linux.

So you can two Things. 1.Make an Dualboot on a Mac
2.Use Virtualbox or VMWareFusion3 with an LinuxVM or WindowsVM inside.

GENERAL: I'm getting money to buy 4144 a used mac on Craigslist or Ebay or Amazon.
