I thought that as long as you were not gaining exp in your AFK activity you could not get banned?
(yeah yeah I know not a discussion forum, just curious)

You misunderstood that. Not gaining exp is one (but not the only) condition to get a permission from the server administration to run a legal bot (like tradebot).
Without the explicit permission from the server administration ANY afk activity is forbidden.

You might have heard a certain rumor about me. This rumor is completely false. You might also have heard the other rumor about me. This rumor is 100% accurate.
Activity is anything movement related, including emotes, spell casting, equipping/unequipping visible items, etc. Sitting is not considered an activity, although rotating is considered an activity.
AFK is determined by a GM requesting a response in an allotted amount of time.
Titan_ was moving and did not respond, therefore was banned.

Theres a point too as Yubaba made..Just a point of opinion..but many newbies actually dont know how to type! I was in tulimshar with friends a few days ago..and we actually had to tell a newbie how to type before he could express himself as to what he wanted..
In such a case..what happens?
There is a solution to every problem..only impossibility lies in finding it..
I've experienced the same as yubabax116 with some newbies. Most of them don't even know how to equip their cotton shirt much less chat. I remember the first time I played and I went mad trying to figure out the keys. I disabled my chatbox and opened a few windows when I messed with the Function keys (unbeknownst to me). I ended up having to purge my copy of the client and to re-install it for fix it the first time. Also, I don't know about you, but I went through the first 40 levels without talking to anybody else at all. I think the first time I actively communicated with anybody was with Gotcha.
So what I'm trying to say is that most newbies don't know about the wiki (I didn't) and most don't bother reading the guide (Yet again, I didn't either). Titan_ probably didn't know how to chat and his randomly walking around was probably an attempt to come to grips with the client.
The player was a bot, he was not walking around like a player does, he had a weird pattern never stop or change maps, just walk step by step in the same area for 5 minutes after trying to help him, i warned and ban him. Also I talked to him in English, Spanish and Portuguese he never stop in front or next to me he did not notice me, Guys we can see if it is a player or not.
A player will stop and watch what I'm asking even if he can't type this bots don`t do that.
On the subject of newbies, trust me, you can tell a bot from a newbie. I have told dozens of people how to type in game. But the rules are the rules. Do you allow a speeder because he cant read? Do you allow to run a stop sign because he can not see color?
The point with the newbie quesitons, they know the rules and you can set and look at the controls at any time.
As far as I know, not a single newbie was ever caught botting in the desert city.
I am relentless, unpredictable, waiting for your last breath- Princess of Darkness
I started to play here few days ago and i had no issues using the chat, lots online games have enter key as default to allow chats, it's become a sort of standard.
I read the rules and rule number two says no bots.
I am quite sure that bot and players behave differently, there are so damn good bots but also there are bad bots and this is that case.
When GMs talk to newbies like me we feel like when the police asks id card for the first time that you are driving alone.
A new player would probably sits and stop to move all over the map trying to find out how to chat, that's what happened to me the first time that i saw a GM, it's pretty common in my opinion.
GMs are doing a great job, better than other games that i played where GMs are almost ghosts, i don't think that they deserve to be threated badly like i saw on some threads, they have been nominated GMs which means that are skilled enough to deal with these situations.
