There are many names in the game that are a small jokes...

Wyara- sounds like "faith" in Polish
Neko- cat in Japanese (look at his face!)
Lora Tay- TayLor
Basil- hotel owner in Dimond's Cove http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil_Fawlty

Katze, Dimond and Reid are well-known players.
I suspect that one drunken dead guy in GY Inn has a name after a developer...

Spells:
#itenplz - self-explaining :D The words that aggravate...
#inwilt- invigilation
#kaflosh- makes rain, "kalosh" is a rubber-boot in Polish

Hurnscald - these grounds belong to someone ;)
Candor- Jack-O, Halloween, candies?
Tulimshar- sounds exotic, but iI have no idea
Nivalis- "nivale" means "snow" in Italian

Anyone watches Doctor Who? When you are learning focus and Luca's hypnotizing you, he says "Don't blink. Whatever you do, don't blink." I don't know if it was intentional though.

Any more ideas?
P.S. I miss Kirk and Spock in Nivalis. I don't know why there were in this particular place, but still.

That's a shout-out to Secret of Mana, one of the 16bit generation RPGs which were the main inspiration of TMW in its early years. In that game Neko was an antromorphic cat salesman the player met in dungeons and who sold items to the player at inflanted prices.
Derpella wrote:I know that Katze and Dimond are players, but I don't know what was first- the player or the place/NPC...
The players were first.
Derpella wrote:Hurnswald -"hurn" doesn't really mean anything, but together it sounds like a German town near the forest
Nope, the name Hurnscald has a different hidden meaning.

There are at least two more NPC names that refer to players/developers (one of them pretty obvious) - but since I chose them it'd be boring to tell them here.

Hint about Hurnscald: it has to do with its creator.

To be honest Tulimshar has no hidden message.
However its an anagram to words "A Hurt Slim".
I miss whole Enterprise ship below the surface of Nivalis :D

Hi,

Some of the spell invocations are related to a family of 80s/90s RPGs. One of the magic puzzles is stolen almost directly from a terrific adventure game/RPG from the early 90s. Also, one of the magic-related NPCs has a name derived rather directly from Swedish (though the meaning should be easy enough to guess for people with background in Germanic languages, including English). (Also, at least two of the NPCs were "visually inspired" by (a) a JRPG character, and (b) a 90s manga protagonist. I'm not sure how well that came across in the realisation, admittedly, and I'm not sure if (b) ever ended up getting included.)

And yes, the Doctor Who reference was rather less than subtle. Sorry about that.

I have invented the name Crushland and insisted on it, but Crush was playing modest one and disobeyed.

Regards.

Arkim. Maybe.

It's a Batman reference, I think. In the "bat cave" there is an Arkim, with the variant 'Arkham' being the name of the insane asylum in Batman comics.
