im not a good pixel artist
When you want to improve I would recommend to learn how to pixel curves instead of trying to do a circular object like the snail shell from 8 exacly horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines.
The key to drawing anything which is not a man-made object (not just in pixel art but in art in general) is to avoid straight lines, because mother nature doesn't own a straightedge.

Yes, the outer shape is much better that way. But the light direction of the shading seems inconsistent.
An important comment regarding the chapter about shading in that tutorial:
The light direction in the tutorial is coincidally the same TMW uses, but of the shading techniques presented, TMW only uses "layered shading" and "dithering".

Everyone can learn pixel art when willing to investing some time and energy into it.
Read the tutorials on
http://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/ ... #Tutorials and study the pixel art from the sprite-based games of the early 90s to find out what they did to make their graphics look the way they do.
Pixel art isn't magic. It just boils down to changing the color value of every pixel which doesn't look like the thing you want to make

As far as I can tell you only changed the outline. While this is indeed an improvement I was rather referring to the shading of the shell surface.
The spiral of a snail shell is definitely not an easy object to shade. When you don't understand yet how to shade two-dimensional shapes to make them look like three-dimensional bodies you should practice with simpler geometrical objects first. Like making a circle look like a sphere or a hexagon look like a cube (without using lines).
