You awaken with a pounding headache. You can't remember where you are or what you did last night. Perhaps these answers will come in time.

You find yourself on a cold stone slab. Your feet hang off the end and your hands hang off the sides.

It is dark here, but not completely, though you can't tell where it's coming from without moving. You can't smell anything here.

What do you do first?

See what the floor looks like (while I try mentally to retrace my steps; ie, "what's the last thing I remember?").
See if I can stand up on the ground. If so, then carefully walk toward the source of the light (careful not to fall into any pits or whatever). On the way, I'll try and feel the ground and see if it's smooth, rough, etc..

You try to sit up, but your head swims and you fall back down. When you fall back down, your back feels cold. You notice you are naked.

You did get a glimpse that the light was in the general direction of your feet, so you try to turn yourself around in that direction. You are relieved to find that the amber glow is coming from an item that you recognize as yours - it's not much, but you won't feel totally naked.

The item is a: (insert any single ordinary item from one of the following categories: weapon, piece of armor, spellbook, ring, potion, scroll, amulet, food item, or tool.)

The amber color suggest it might be my leather satchel.

..as a grab the item though and get a better look, I realize it is actually a potion of some sort. I pick it up and quaff it, hoping for the best

You feel better. Your maximum HP increases by 5.

You identify an emerald potion as a potion of extra healing.

You're not sure how, but the room is now illuminated. It looks like this:

There is a familiar, friendly, feeling coming from the altar on which you lay - a feeling of (order, balance, chaos)

I take a look at my body and try to estimate my age, sex and physical fitness.

Feeling somewhat replenished from the potion I feel that I've regained some courage enough to test my balance again and try to observe my surroundings a little closer.

Please answer the (lawful, neutral, chaotic) question first.

Though to get it out of the way, I was planning on letting you choose your own gender in a turn or two ... maybe using a prompt like "Er, you are male, right?" Male is my default answer to that question, but this is the Internet, so I could make female work with some of the later plot.

The only interesting things you see in the room are the altar you just got off of, the closed door on the far end of the room, and the closed chest on the side.

It suddenly occurs to me, "oh yeah, the altar of balance! How could I ever forget it."

You can't tell your exact age, but you seem to be in decent physical health, especially after quaffing that healing potion, but you're not an athlete or bodybuilder.

I'm going to assume you're male unless you decide otherwise before leaving the temple.

You know what the room looks like. What do you do?

I open the door to the south

You try to open the door, but it is locked.

look around in the east side of the room, examining the floor & wall.

Trying not to over think things I walk over to the chest to see if I can open it.
