Melee pummel settings

I got an idea while reading TvTropes.
What if in melee combat there was some variation in the strikes so that some of them were special manuvers like pummeling with the pommel or crossguard, or trip attacks? Or more mundane variations like the difference between a slash and a stab?
Even more, since the warrior is mainly built on good design rather than good strategy, what if the frequency of these attacks occurring automatically was influenced by a slider bar that the user determined?
(basically, the user would decide how frequenty the warrior attempts special moves in normal combat, and each special move would have advantages and disadvantages to being used).
The "real life" section of this trope was the source of the idea: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M ... eOfAWeapon
