Yesterday, i've first time installed and played mana world at the other place.
Today i'm home, so i did install game here too (ubuntu 12.04.04LTS).
I get throught login and update but i get "cannot conect to remote host" while loading character!

6901 port is open. (and tried to disable firewall)
1.4.4.12 Linux SDL1.12

Try connect to other servers.
If it still not work, probably you have some kind of network issue.

Another report
Can telnet to the map server fine. telnet server.themanaworld.org 5122
Can connect normally to web

I have a similar issue on Linux Mint Maya 13, with manaplus 1.4.4.12

Short term fix is to switch the port in the server connection in manaplus to 6902 instead of 6901
