are you really sure the item is not in your storage? I hope this is not the case, but if you can't find it I can only think about one of these possibilities:

1. You dropped it to the ground by mistake;
2. You sold it to an NPC by mistake;
3. You put it in the trade window by mistake, while trading with another player.

For major items, to avoid any of those three mistakes, just right-click your item and choose «Protect item». You'll see a padlock on it, which ensure your item will stay safe.

Or you got hacked/scammed, and someone took it.
