The troll face exists in Manaplus's data not TMW. We've reported this to 4144 and Reid knows about it as well.

I want to replace it with this emote:

Or we do have a Troll that has a face we could use.

If TMW is willing to submit a substitute I'm sure that we will be pleased to change it, though, if we just remove the emote or replace it to a lesser good emote, it might prevent some users to upgrade to latest manaplus releases.
Last point, manaplus is used by multiple project, just consider this if you want to submit a proposition.

How serious is this issue?
AFAIK that troll face is used in every corner of the internet.

Well if Manaplus gets reported for it.

1) a DMCA will be issued which will force us to remove it at the very least.

2) Manaplus could get kicked out of the Linux repos, gitlab, github, gitorious etc.

3) Manaplus could get sued for damages.

DMCA can work only in usa based comapies/organisations.
From related to manaplus services this is only cloudflare.

Yerp, but all the Open Source repos would pull it. Some countries might even block it based on the DMCA.

IMO, we should just replace it as it's the only piece that at all infringes on anything. Otherwise Manaplus runs the risk of being pulled from distros and blocked by countries.

Has anyone in the TMWC contacted the creator of the trollface emoticon to ask for permission to use it in Manaplus? If not, then I think that would be a good idea. If he gives permission, then there wouldn't be a copyright problem.

It should be a Hat Emoji like the sorting hat but grinning like the troll hat.

I think the discussion above your post were very reasonable to first understand if and how urgent a fix is needed

Isn't that a good idea and the first thing to do?
