I have tried unsuccessfully many attempts at using the magic spell, along with hugging the tree and have not made any progress. The tree will not heal, I do not get any text confirmation saying that the tree is healthier as expected. I am not on the dark path and did not kill the injured mouboo, and did not cut any branches from the tree.
