[WIP] Rowboat

Post by EJlol »

A big merchant ship needs a row boat to be able to go ashore on land (the water near the beach is too swallow for big ships like that). In the harbor it might also be nice to have a little bit of variation between boats.

So here is the start of a rowboat.

Awesome! For that kind of boat, I don't think a sail is necessary. Although, boat oars would be great!
I think we can make that be a great decoration tileset for the harbor!

These tiles are mostly decorative, thus you can use a different orientation instead of the plain side or front view as we won't need to "walk" on it.
Len did a good ship tile for WoA, having two orientation would be pretty neat, although, your outlines are actually pretty good too!

True. But copy+paste is a lot easier than flatten, export to .png, and then upload... Anyway I have uploaded it now.

I haven't really thought about that. But using a plain side view is a lot easier to draw than drawing a different orientation. I will think about it, as a different orientation does look more natural and/or better. Do you have a link too Len's ship?

I can't find it, but I'm sure I saw it not long ago on our forums.

Here's one, but not from Len:

And finally, a canoe, created by Nami:

A boat such as Len's is the style of sprite to use when the boat is not in use.
The symmetrical and bilateral boat with an outline indicating that it is an object is something that should be interactive somehow.

Small update, sketched out the north and south view. I know that it looks like a wooden box at the moment, I'm working on it.

Here is my try for this, perhaps its helpful. I plan to add stuff like rope or something into the boat to give it a bit more depth.. Also I think when we can make it nicely animated with someone using the oars, and some foam or something on the water surface it could be sufficient like this..

UPDATE: here is the plan. Right now its a monster, so it can be mounted / player to sit in bow or stern, and that way player can pass water areas:

It looks a bit wide, is this done to match the size of the player sprite? Are there plans to have players sitting in it?

The reason it is wide is cause I made the side view first. I just eyeballed it until it felt right. After that I rotated the rowboat, and because of the perspective it becomes wider than I first had in mind...

@Micksha, the shape is definitely better than what I had. I'm not to keen on the front of the boat though... The way it is shaped now means that the sides of the boat are dangerously low to the water. As for the depth, I also have a few small tricks in mind (mostly by adding some structural things). Adding some items below the benches is a great idea though and should definitely help out.

Yea, I agree EJlol. Also I believe also the front view should have much higher boarders (normally the front of the boat comes out of the water much more than everything else). I was just playing around a bit .. :)
I will leave the boat to you for now, I will focus on the rowing sprite (which is a bit tricky, especially when we want to fix the oaks on the boat so their position has to be constant). He will wear ragged shorts, a sailor shirt and a bandana, ok?
