Can't stop auto-creeping forward into danger

My character keeps inching forward with every swing, when in uh... attack mode, going right into the enemy's range. Is there a setting to disable that or something? I want to position the character myself, but I don't want to have to keep hitting the attack button for every swing.
Hope I'm not missing something obvious.
