Second Life has make their client open source. It looks like it is under a GNU license. Perhaps there is some code that we could make use of.

An intelligent move from LindenLabs to make their client open source. Considering that the second life community is really large and full of creative individuals with programming skills and the will to create for the enjoyment of the whole community there might be a lot of useful contributions from the community in the future.

As I read they also plan to publish the server software under the GPL one day. Considering how flexible and dynamic the 2nd life world is I think it would be a piece of cake to use this technology to create a 3d mmorpg.

But I doubt that the sourcecode of the 2nd life client got anything that is of any use for us.

How about a the chat protocol? Or is that all server side?

The client-sided implementations of text-based chats are usually rather trivial.
