I don't like them, that's why I've "made" them:
Save them under "emotions.png" and replace the "old emotions file" in "\The Mana World\data\graphics\sprites".
Feel free to use

On the long run we'll probably support using different themes for different things, but we don't feel that it is a priority at the moment to implement such behaviour.

Lolorlzolzorz bst post 3va!
In a more serious tone, as Tenn said, they are just for those who WANT to use them. If you don't, then just ignore his post. And if you think you can do better, then make em and post em, rather than arguing.

while i think it is safe to say that maybe half of the players would not like to use this emotion set, maybe there could be a emotion selection. maybe something that could be changed, almost like "skining" your web browser. seems like something simple ot impliment.

I check every new post in Graphics Development.
@ Dr Wahl: Yes, that will (almost definitely) be a possibility eventually.

Why have emoticons? Its only function is to not have to write.
Imho this is one of the most aggravating things about mmorpgs. Everything have been streamlined so that you can actually have a converation with another person without writing a single sentence. Where's the roleplaying and personal contact with that?
I say make TMW without any quick and easy communication shortcuts. Make people actually have to talk and interact with each other. Support for Headset so that players can talk to each other should be an option. At least it will get people more personal.
