Help required getting started

Hello, I'm new to the Mana World. I was just trying it last night and I got very bored after an hour of maggot/scorpion/fire thingy bashing and getting nowhere.

What am I missing?

In my experience there's hardly any progress or anything to earn. You need to bash a LOT of maggots and other monsters to be able to earn some cash. And when I finally bought a sharp knife, it hardly did me any good.
And trying to attack some monsters outside of the starters/starting castle, well, I lasted for about 5 secs. Again, even after an hour of playing.
Having a steep leveling curve is not a bad thing if there's more than one place to do your thing...

I suspect playing like I do is the wrong approach to the Mana World. But what is the right approach.

Well, that's what you get when you are playing a game clearly labled as "in development" and "version 0.0.x".

The game that is currently running on the offical server is not really "the mana world" but a simplified version of Ragnarok Online. We currently use a RO server emulator to serve as a test environment for our client software. Its main purpose is not to be a fun game but to test the graphic engine, gui system and game graphics.

We are currently developing a new server software that will allow us to have a much more interesting gameplay. It is going to replace the current sever. So we are not really investing a lot of time and energy into improving the gameplay on the current server. All of it would be a waste of time and energy that would be dumped on the long run.

For more information about our new server please read our New Server FAQ.

I understand the part of the game being in development, but concerning the version numbers; a lot of (very) usable open source applications never get past the alpha or beta stage

It's a pity though that there's nothing to play yet, I'm afraid this will scare away a lot of players for good, that would have otherwise enjoyed the game very much. So in my endless wisdom  i'd like to advise you to provide some gameplay a.s.a.p.

I'm sorry to say that I'm not able to help out here.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for newer versions and good luck!

By the way, you talk about the 'official servers', are there unofficial servers that provide a playable environment?

We got an unofficial server that runs the most recent development version of the new server for testing purpose. But you have to download another version of the client from the svn repository and compile it yourself to play on it and it provides even less gameplay in the current state of development. I wouldn't suggest anyone who is not interested in helping with the development to try it out.
