Sound and music repositories: Musopen, PDsounds...

Post by Pajarico »

Here is project with public domain classical music played by university students:
http://www.musopen.com/music.html

I don't know how well would them fit in TMW, but it might give some ideas or serve as placeholders in some parts.

Sadly, the recording quality isn't really up to standard. Or maybe it is because they are compressed using MP3? Even Rosegarden can generate better quality music with decent sound fonts.

Still better than most of the random jumble we have now.
This message used to be meaningful.

The noise level is fine with what we have now. The problem is that TMW's music are too repeatative and noticable, which get really annoying if you have to listen to it for more than 30 minutes.

By the way, does anyone know who created those music? If we have the original music file, we can tweak it to best fit the game.

For some reason, I've never gotten any music on tmw. The only audio I get is the sound effects, and only if the sound system is working properly.

Public Domain sounds is a site with sounds released to the public domain. It has various sounds, ranging from small tunes, to mechanical sounds, to nature sounds.

PDsounds is actually quite cool. Try the cloud tag system, I quickly found the metal tag which is very usable for weapons SFX.

Jamendo has music under various licenses. It was posted before and I'm putting it here for archive.

Free Game Arts has also a section for sound and music.

Finally, there is the Free Game Dev wiki, which has a section for music and sounds.

I found this guy on the Apricot blog (Apricot is a developing game which aims at releasing a professional-grade quality product giving contributors a say in each phase of the development):

i have done a few songs for open source projects like rpg builders that dies and what not. my biggest problem is all the projects i make music for usualy die within a couple years and dont go anywhere. i dont know if i am what you need although i am willing to take on this task. if you would like a sample song off of a prior project heres a link.

The song is good and for his experience he might like TMW. But I don't seem to find a way to contact him directly.

Also, have someone on the team considered putting up a blog to inform of the recent news like server progress, or to attract attention for a wanted position like composer?

Maybe because music is in different package.

Well... I have something I started last night... see what you think... it's a bit ploddy, the mix do do with some attention, the cellos sounds a little bit heavy at the minute and there's almost no percussion (lol, I'm making a good case for myself here)

but given some EQ across a few instruments, tweaks, a little re-arranging and implementing a few more decorative elements, could sound very settled and polished... it's just the skeleton of the initial idea for a town-type theme...

Hey guys, just posted this in job section... though maybe I should be posting here from now...?

Pajarico, I um... I was on that Apricot blender forum also, though since those guys have given almost no movement on this, I dove into here. Hope you don't mind :\
