Rotonen's avatar

Post by Rotonen »

I have slowly started to grow tired of my avatar (which I made in 2002). Hence I'm going to try something interesting.

First of all the background story:

It is me wearing a hooded sweater in so poor lighting the cellphone cameras of the day made the picture all red and full of artifacts. Later played around with spectrum switch in GIMP and liked what I saw.

Then into business we go:

To start the topic, should I finally change the avatar? Yes/no and a reason. Detailed opinions and unique reasons preferred. Discussion on given reasons is open. (Everything else at this point is either so poorly constructed or offtopic that I will probably utilize my moderator magic to make it go away. After there is some kind of a consensus amongst people on this topic will move on or be closed. I love the offtopic section, don't fail me on this.)

1.7.2008 EDIT:

Added the poll. The poll will run for 30 days and act as the first round of elimination. How? You will see...

In the vote, give a vote to all of the avatars you like. The original is also in there, but not up for voting in this round. You can also change your mind and vote again (which will change your previous vote).

Here is your pool of choices:

2.8.2008 EDIT:

Whoo, playoffs started. First battle is the one on the right. It'd be too conventional and boring to go from left to right. One week and we'll see which of the two was eliminated.

12.8.2008 EDIT:

Longcat prevails. Now it is about the two drunken pictures.

14.9.2008 EDIT:

Voting resumes via alternative means: http://www.micropoll.com/akira/mpview/476053-106052

21.9.2008 EDIT:

White tie prevails. Now let's vote between the emotionless block and the hairy emotionless block. New poll up.

29.9.2008 EDIT:

Emotionless block churns on. This week it's about the original against the anime thingy. We'll see.

6.10.2008 EDIT:

My original one held on. Let's see what happens this week.

Well after your change I have sometimes very briefly confused you with iru so that is a rather valid point. On the other hand in life things tend to change over time and people adapt to change quite well.

Well at some point I got tired of my avatar so I just updated it, and I was happy again.

If you are tired of it just change/update it, it's your "Business card" after all.

Well you know Rotonen... Your avartar is nice, but it does seem to need something new...
It's kinda old....... *cough cough*
I mean maybe like Axltrozz said just try new ones til you find the "one".
I mean I changed my avatar I dunno four, five maybe three times and I think the one I have now is perfect!
So, try some new ones like anime faces!

Lately, Rotonen, you have seemed a bit...less harsh than usual. Maybe you should have an avatar to reflect that? Like a pink butterfly! Or a bunny! =D
In game I am Xaru
On forums I am Superkoop
IRL I am John

I feel that a total redesign would be uncalled for... I look at the avatar before I look at the author.

However, I am not against modifications to one's existing avatar, as then you would still be recognisable.

I too have found the sensor static and GIF compression induced stray pixels to be really definitive of me. Sort of puts some of my commentary into somewhat of an appropriately ironical light.

I alway though you avatar made you look like the emperor from StarWars.
"...now take your father place at my side!!!!!!!" Emperor, Return of the Jedi
"Too much of a good thing is an awesome thing, but too much of an awesome thing is, um, really really dumb. And bad." Strong Bad

Well yes, it does have that evil sinister overlord-ish tone to it due to the hood and all the other factors. Somehow it has suited me quite fine over the years.

Your avatar looks like a hero or something.

This is going to get blown beyond belief now.

With this post, the first round of elimination will start.

I'll edit the first post and add the poll.

The image in the first topic will change as the process progresses. This one is posted for archival reasons and explainations.

Image

00 - This you already know.
01 - An old animated TV with static. I like how it looks like.
02 - I like the aesthetics of it and for me it is anti-war.
03 - This is how reading these forums occasionally makes me feel.
04 - Yet again I like the aesthetics here. Also a referrence to my army assignation (biological weapons counter unit).
05 - Animated C64-ish pixel blinker.
06 - For some reason, Longcat is one of my all-time favorite characters.
07 - I'm quite certain that some of you out there consider me an emotionless machine at times.
08 - Yet again how the forums make me feel occasionally.
09 - I'm also quite sure this is how some of you see me.
10 - Same goes here.
11 - A combination of the previous four explainations.
12 - Aesthetics thing again. And yes I do know who and from which anime, thank you in advance.
13 - Kind of resembles my old avatar and I like the source of it.
14 - Me in a a plane on a study related trip to southern Europe enjoying my sparkling wine.
15 - An old picture of me in a suit. Horrible posture there due to lack of motivation while working, kind of makes me smile.
16 - Me in a white tie in our study Guild's annual jubileum (academical table party, yes, pretty drunk).
17 - Me in a random Slovenian bar in an after general meeting session party in EESTEC Congress 2008.
18 - Me in Croatia, "enjoying" local "quality" "vodka".
19 - Me, First of may 2007, just a nice calm pic.
20 - Somehow I associate myself with that Guy Fawkes mask.

There you go, discussion is now open and unmoderated.
