My Very First MMO
Posted: 12 Nov 2008, 02:50
Folks, let me be honest... before yesterday, I had never played an MMORPG. I did make an account on Runescape one time, but I never started it. But after finding TMW in my package manager, I'll never play anything else.
I don't just like it because it's free. I like it because it's Free. Free as in Freedom. I've been obsessed (for lack of a better word) with the Free Software Foundation, GNU, GPL, Creative Commons, and all that other awesome stuff. I run Linux now, I don't use proprietary software, I've stopped buying DVDs and Video Games, I play Ogg, and I use FreeSerif on all of my paperwork. Richard Stallman is my new greatest hero, I advocate freedom, and... well, you get the idea.
I also love how the game is a work in progress. As an aspiring computer scientist, I really enjoy being able to play a game and then look at the source code for it. Nothing makes me happier than understanding how a program works. The freedom to tinker, and all that. I'm really excited about the new server system coming out... losing my data is a small price to pay for a new game engine (plus, my data is only two days old XD). The whole notion of being able to utilize the engine and turn any personal server into an MMO server is a great undertaking, and I applaud the developers, the designers, and everyone else in charge of this project. You folks are great. You've got nothing but my respect (and my bandwidth XD).
Sorry for posting such a long random thread, but free software gets me really emotional. I'll never play anything else on this computer... except maybe SuperTux...
