Why people watch japanese anime if they dont speak it? Because it's fun and probably better than your language can give to you. Not all people are born in UK/US or other english-speaking countries. We should know English, but English people usually don't speak any other language...

This world has many languages, and all people don't have chance to learn foreign language. I don't say we should change world, but you can give freedom of speech to all people.

If somebody offends you on other language, report him to GM. If somebody's "illegal" talk doesn't offend player to who it is talked, why it should be problem to GM?

I understand and GM's side, but 10 GM's aren't same as 10000 players.

Sorry for bad english.

EDIT: if they can't report bug, they can have fun. Is that forbiden? And there are people who can translate, you know...

I understand that English isn't taught in all countries, but who said that the developers all spoke English as their native language? Crush, Bjorn, Modanung, Platyna, and Katze don't speak English as their primary language. In fact, most of our community members speak English as their second language. Life is not fair. The Mana World is not a democracy. If you have a problem go make a Spanish server, forum, or fork. English has 1,800,000,000 speakers, I think we can manage.

Deal with it and get on with your lives, because it only gets worse from here. The developers plan on making quests require a VERY high mastery of the English language that a translator won't work for.

Life is not fair, everything is not a democracy, you can't always have your say. Is using

Code: Select all

/whisper "player name" message
So hard for you? Honestly, if you can't memorize just one English word for a player command, then you are pretty pathetic.

I agree with crojas. I know just a little bit english, and i manage to explain everything that i need. But sometimes i need to explain things in my first languaje , Spanish. It's not tolerant to discriminate me.

Spanish and every language should be legal in this game.

See all Elven and GM. The truth is that it is too tired to be translated into English for every blessed word that does not expel a truth is that everyone has the right to speak as you like, Chinese who speak Chinese, Japanese in Japanese, English in English, and that we speak Spanish or Latin Americans that we can not speak our language to you does not affect them in anything then those who speak Spanish we go to another city in the game and the English in a way no one affects anyone and also those who understand a little English like me and others that we are not perfect but nothing more welcome and also because many Latin Americans play this game and they know all about the quest and what they did not understand anything else comes to Wikipedia and translated into Spanish so that's all Ãs no problem between English and Spanish, as I said before this game is too good to be finished as soon Ãs enough to speak Spanish in the Ãs this game pro connected as 101 people when in need Elven and developers are unwilling to talk to you This game is famous and become one of the best effort with the Spanish and English that can be done. one thing if this game outside world Bone language all languages I assure you that more people are coming from fixed this game is very attractive to people like mmorpg online and over this. I can get my example to my ever mmorpg that I liked the slow rise, this is slow and sluggish rises in dropeo charm for me but it feels that Ãs an atmosphere of friendship of companionship and you know that if we put on our part This game will be the famous assure you. Digamso Spaniards will talk about this game to your friends, like the French, like the Chinese and so each will look more and more knowing, and talves more pages of information about this game more fun and more links

A guild system might solve this, although AFAIK it's not implemented yet. That would let a whisper go to a group.
OTOH, this would result in guilds based on language, rather than other interests.

I am not saying that all the game should be in spanish, what I am trying to do here its to reach freedom for all users, I entered in this game because fo the great team of peolple who created this game and because I think that this is the best option of rpg's games for gnu/linux. but as every good thing in life, it can be better for everybody and with the liberty of speaking our languages we can have another great reason to play this wonderful game.

As an English-Only speaking member of the TMW community, I can understand the plight of both sides of this discussion. I would like to give you all my opinion, that being, that from a management point-of-view having to only manage a game that caters for many different languages would be a nightmare, so implementing a rule that limits the in-game language to just one takes a lot of strain from the GM's and the developers (who don't need to try and cater for non-english speaking players)

On the other hand, I can also understand the frustration of non-english speaking players. We all like to speak our native language.

Unfortunatly, we have a majority of players willing to follow the rules set out in the game and a minority of players with a genuine greivence, the only solution I see is for someone to step up and offer their services to translate the game into "Localized" versions, and for there to be different implementations of the server (i.e. server.themanaworld.org = english, spanish.themanaworld.org = spanish)

This would not only make the language aspect of the game a non-issue, but if the localized servers were hosted in countries where they are localized for, gameplay could be made considerably less "laggy"

Thats my 2 cents. Interpret it as you wish.

kr0n05931 wrote:You can whisper to other players in any language. The thing is that the moderators don't speak every language and do not know when users speaking other languages are engaging in illegal activity.
I have the pleasure to be part of a large number of different communities in inet, public and private. I work in a place where english, even not being the primary language for all of us, is almost the only language we use... but i have never read such stupid thing in my life as this new "great" idea. I'll add this one to the other recent "great" ideas that you have developed. I will try to concentrate in this particular issue since i have already talk about the other great ideas in another post.

Is clear that, from the moderators standing point, it's impossible to do their job if they don't understand the lenguage used by the players. But we already had a rule for that. now you're trying to make it tighter enough to make it impossible to play for people that doesn't understand nor speak english. Mine is not very good, but improves every day and i'm proud of that. However, I've seen players, spanish speakers, 8, 9 or 10 years old enjoying this game a lot and having fun in a "free" way. most of us are linux users and, in case you geniuses didn't noticed, linux is getting very popular around here (im in argentina BTW) so it's natural that lots of non english speaker users got here. I don't have much time to commit to nor have any intention of becoming a spanish/english moderator or something like that. But you really need to start thinking before is too late: this stupid ideas will left your server virtually empty... of course if this happen you all will be free to play with the rest of the developers and moderators...

Another great suggestion i saw around was to have a spanish server. this is a good and a bad idea: good cause we'll be able to play without the annoying only english rule, but at the cost of losing the diversity in the actual server which is (believe it or not) the only thing that makes me come back every day.
kr0n05931 wrote:People look, this should be common knowledge: Why are you playing an ENGLISH game if you don't SPEAK it!?!

¡Escucha!
again, the same user making another stupid point... man, you live in a some EU country, and the rest of us live in the 3º world. Access to education is not simple and not all of us speak english plus, this is not an "english" game... at least i haven't read that anywhere around here... and please, don't use google to translate anymore. it's a really bad taste idea and it is insulting in some way.

this is the total zenith of stupidity. Please, next time, at least have the decency of putting a banner saying clearly "WE DON?T WONT NON ENGLISH SPEAKERS IN THIS GAME"

and im sorry to say it this way, because i think will harm the non english speakers cause, but you are my sweet heart, or at least you act like one pretty good.

viva la resistencia!

BTW, Elanor my wife's character (who doesn't speak english) is very angry about this too...

I also see this from both sides, and I find that the staff here make good arguments.

It is difficult to find a GM who could monitor every language spoken at many different times. If the staff were to try and compensate by having multiple GMs from each language, then there would be many many GMs, and there are not necessarily enough trustworthy people who could fulfill this important role, not to mention the Gm to Player ration would skyrocket.

As such, I have nothing wrong with people who go into buildings, or are in a dungeon and just say small things to each other in other languages, and I do not believe the GMs, staff, or players mind, however speaking other languages in ares where large numbers of players gather at once is not allowed because this other-language chatter becomes spam.

This also leads, however, to the issues that many non-English speaker have of translating one line and repeating it over and over. This has been solved (or bettered) however by the auto-ban for spamming.

I as such, the point made of "why do you play an English-made game if you can not speak it" is very valid, however notice that even though other-language speaking happens in the game, the number of people who do it in small groups and not in open, large player-base areas are not punished or bothered with. It is not difficult to follow this rule. If you find that you absolutely cannot use whispering in large areas, or take your companions who speak your language to a safe, non massive-player spot, then it is simply laziness, and therefore has no excuse.

I started this debate, so I think its time to listen to a conclusion from people of the high range of this game, maybe the moderator, maybe some developers or some people like them.
I want to get a razonable answer from you guys.
