Is it possible to punish thieves?

IMO drop/kill stealing shouldn't be possible at all, but since it is, there ought at least to be a way to hit back; like eg. if somebody steals from me, I can brand the character with the word "THIEF" in big red letters visible to everybody, so people would get a fair warning. Otherwise these parasites will simply become bullies that ruin the game for far too many.

it is not a crime to do that.....
but it's bad.....
i agree with you but there is nothing we can do...
all we have to do is to catch every loot before they steal it

then you propose only 1 player can fight a monster? that is single player not multiplayer so i disagree with it
as for drop stealing there is a time in which only player that make more dmg can pick then player with second more dmg etc and from a time and more all players can pick an item.
the above is fair enough for preventing drop stealing (perhaps you disagree with the time these protections last but i do not understood something like that from your post )

Namikaze: Perhaps there isn't anything we can do - but I still think it ought to be possible to let it have consequences. Perhaps not for doing it (very) occasionally, but there are some players that have made it a lifestyle, and they should be discouraged.
crazy: I don't agree that it is either 'singleplayer or kill-stealing' - there is a middle ground. After all, in real life cooperation is something that happens by consent in most circumstances; you can't barge in on a group that has already started on an activity unless you already know them as friends. In TMW I imagine it could be implemented by only allowing people belong to the same group to work together. IOW, you have to first agree with somebody to work together.

Maybe a way to put a brake on the most notorious thieves would be to turn them into "monsters" for a while; meaning that on one hand they can be played, but they are confined to one map, and they can be killed by other players. And killing returns them to the same map, until they have been in active play for the duration of their punishment.

I think there should be punishment that thieves can't pick anything in some time. Like you steal maggot slime you can't pick anything for 3 minutes, you steal pearl you can't pick anything for 3000 minutes of active play.... That way there would be no thieves, but still, how would TMW know when something is stolen and when given? When I play in group with somebody weaker I sometimes leave something to them. Would that be stolen too?
Maybe you are thief if you pick something without making any damage, and are reported by player.

Drop stealing is rather difficult at the moment. The person who deals the most damage has 6 seconds to pick up what they want. Then the second most (and first most) damage giver has 2 seconds, then the tird (and second and first) has 2 seconds. If only one person did damage recently, on the 6 seconds are used.
Identifying kill stealing is rather difficult, thats why nothing is done.

You already can't drop steal because of the time limit on looting and if you don't like killing monsters with other people then go and play a single player game.

Really? I have experienced several times that a certain player has been clung to me and stolen my loot immediately; I don't know how. I did the same once - by accident, I was trying to click on a monster right next to one that a player was fighting, and instead picked up something that was dropped in the same instant.
if you don't like killing monsters with other people then go and play a single player game.
Don't be silly; there are more than those two possibilities - either play completely alone or tolerate completely unrestricted sharing. It is perfectly possible to imagine a situation where sharing things is by invitation only - just look at Crossfire, where you can join a group. It isn't even all that difficult to implement, if I am not much mistaken.

how would TMW know when something is stolen and when given?
I can think of several ways:
1. Make dropped items the property of the player who killed the monster until s/he moves a certain distance away or some time has passed.
2. Implement a 'give' command, so you could give items away rather than dropping them.
3. When a player drop an item, it no longer belongs to him and can be picked up by anybody
4. Implement a group concept: each player is by default a group. You can invite others in or ask to join the group of another. And you can set a parameter on your character to allow everybody to share in your kills and drops if that suits you.

Maybe they invented "bot" which removes somebody's ownership? It wouldn't be impossible, would it? I think "protection" sometimes don't work, I don't know why. Anyway dropstealing is still possible, but I don't mind it.
Dropstealers miss all fun and expiriance.

How does warlords plate or forest bow helps if you are lvl 5? You still miss 9/10 hits (if you're lucky

) and do 100 damage at most. You still get lots of damage and have 200 HP.
I think players who dropsteal are just hurting themselfs, not others. But I still can get mad

What if i'm only showing item to somebody? I like showing off
EDIT: OFFTOPIC: when I'll stop being peon? It's not like I care about number of post, I just like human more than orcs (in warcraft human are peasant and orcs peon), I would rather be noob than peon
