If you want to be a mage, you need to have as much int as possible. But vit is also vital.
and a bit of luck can't be wrong to avoid critical hits.
Sorry for not being able to give you a precise answer.

I'm a mage, currently with ninety Intelligence, and I have a feeling my ... please don't use invocations in forum posts, let alone in the thread titles... or if you must put them in a post, use the
Spoiler:
tag in the title.
Anyway, I have a feeling my Hard Skin spell does not last for as long as ten minutes. I could be wrong... it does last for a while.
Mages need VIT and INT only. Try raising your INT to 40, then your VIT to 20, then INT to 60, VIT to 30, INT to 70, VIT to 35, INT to 80, VIT to 40, INT to 90, VIT to 45, INT to 99. Don't bother about any stat points left over. I'm level 61, with 1 on everything bar INT and VIT: 90 and 45 respectively, as I recall. Of course once you have 99 INT you can put everything on VIT.
~hope this helps,

Dexterity and Luck don't affect magic at all, but I guess Dex would help stop monsters hitting you.
~personally I would go for a bit higher Int and a bit lower Dex...

If it helps, after magic was released I set my stats to: 1 str, 1 agi, 70 vit, 81 Int, 1 dex and 50 luk (at level 74.)
For a pure mage, dex shouldn't matter at all; but if you choose that path you'll need to have quite a reserve of items to fuel it, since you'll be left with only a _very_ inaccurate and weak melee attack (or an even more inaccurate archery attack) if the items (and hence spells) run out.
(also, could you please mark the thread with
Spoiler:
and remove the spell invocation from the title if possible? )

You agree with me, then, Free, about the spoilers.
At any rate, as I mentioned in another thread, I usually alternate between gathering herbs and levelling. I can get 50k an hour easily and thus ten ores an hour, which = fifty Iron Powders. With these I can, at level 60 or so, level once. I think. So that's two hours a level. Anyway this is off topic.
~my stats are 1, 1, 45, 90, 1, 1. I think.

When I play as a mage I agree just intell and vit is the best way to go. Except I usually only do 95 intell and rest in vit. I can see why what katze said would be good too. I'm always playing with my stats currently 1 50 68 99 1 1

Personally when I play mage I put 99 intel and the rest on vit. If I get hit I instant heal myself. If I need to attack I flare dart or lightning.

If your stats are in the wrong place, you can always go to the stat reset NPC.
P.S. I also agree about spoiler being in the title and removing the invocation

Booth that was my goal for the longest time I spent so much money on resets its not funny. I came to the conclusion at my lvl anyways it can not be successfully done with out some major sacrifice. Either your bow will suck or your lighning will and trying to make a balance between the two for them booth to be effective I have yet to achieve. The only way I see this being possible is dumping all the stats in dex and intel but even still one will be abit weak. Plus by doing that your sacrificing agility which an archer really does need and vit which is important if you plan on touring the mines / caves.
The coolest way I combined the two was simply making an archer with the ability to heal. Which I must say is awesome. No more wasting money on beer ;p and it is really hard to die.
If you do make a successful Arch / mage combo please share with us I'd especially be interested in how you achieved it.

In that case, I'd go with 99 Dex, at least 45 Vit (lets you get hit by skulls twice before dying, even with Crititcals), then share the rest between Agi and Int, probably with the most on Agi as I think it's more Magic xp with determines the length of spells like Hard Skin. Could be wrong, but I think so.
~if you have more stat points after 99 Dex and Agi, just go with the Int...
